We have until the 4th of May to get a deserving winner sorted out for Jupiters Opposition.
My company will donate a Toucam pro 840 k or 900nc + adapter, whatever is in stock as a prize. UPDATE.......Asimov has now added a Meade LPI to the prize pool....thanks mate
Look the aim here is to get someone that is starting out in imaging and hasn't already got a toucam + upwards etc up a level with a toucam.
We have already had some great handheld digicam shots etc this jupiter season
Rules (may vary as we go along!)
Image must be of Jupiter taken from tonight onwards until 12pm Monday the 1st of May. I will make a decision and airbag out your prize that night so you have it for the opposition on the 4th May
Your current camera will be taken into consideration for final judging.
You must estimate the seeing and tell me how you worked this out from naked eye, what you first observed through an eyepiece and then finally, what you saw on the camera that you are using.
You must include the date and time of the image.
You must tell me if the image is from a video or a single snap from a camera etc
You must tell me your type of scope, ie 4" refractor, 12" dob.
You must include an unprocessed image ie raw from your camera.
You must outline your processing.
You must provide a final processed image.
That image can be worked upon by other forum members and posted on this site to help the entrants how to learn to process better. But those reprocessed images from others are not eligible. You may however use those tips to work on them yourself and submit an updated image.
You can enter as many entries as you want.
The final decision will be made on a range of issues ie what has been learnt by the winner, the improvement made over the next few weeks. Image scale is a factor but not everything. Moons and red spots etc are a bonus, but again not everything.
This is an educating process where you can draw on the experience on this forum to help you lift your own skills. I want to see the whole process ie from first unprocessed image to final to help from others to a reprocess on your own etc.
I will be posting a daily "Whats going on with Jupiter" along with a screen shot from starry night or pre midnight and post midnght summary of interesting things that are going on
Good Luck and remember, everyone here is learning off each other, from the top imagers to the newest newbie. Have a go, what you accomplish when posting an image of an object from space is special and rare. Not many people get to do it. So be proud of any result you get.

And this really sums it up doesn't it: "Have a go, what you accomplish when posting an image of an object from space is special and rare. Not many people get to do it. So be proud of any result you get."
Good onya mate. (as an afterthought, I hope the winner has a laptop computer to run the webcam)
gee, i actually have one on ebay i am watching. lol
and then i was looking at merlins vesta pro.... i could try some shots tonight i guess..... cept the couds are coming over.
tell ya what dave, if i get a chance ill have a go with my lil' 2mp sony digicam
Great and generous idea! I'm not sure if I qualify - i dont have a toucam, lpi etc, but I do already have a video camera which has so far proved adequate. I'm still quite eager to see the results.
Dave, check your Starry Nights agains Jupiter 2. It looks like yours is like mine. About an 45 min out, showing the transit early at 21:00.
Transit on that night was at 21:42 according to J2 and 21:44 by CalSky. I don't know if there is anyway to adjust SN to fix the problem, I've looked but haven't found anything.
Check SN for tonight and see if yours says around 6:30. If so then it's the same as mine. Meridian transit tonight is around 19:13, 45 min later.
Sorry a bit off topic, but thought it important if people are judging their Meridan transits by SN. If I'm out and it looks like you are out as well, I'll bet we aren't the only ones.
Chrissyo, you do qualify if you would like to enter. Basically the idea is to get guys like you and JJJ and ving to move up a level and get a a toucam etc. Thats is if you believe you will get better results.
Yes, Paul, we have noticed GRS transits early on Starry Night. I download all the updates, but it is roughly 1/8 to 1/10 of a rotation fast.
the overiding spirit of this comp is learning. It is hard to put down rules to cover all situations. Basically, if damian peach, bird or iceman enters the comp, they are ineligible. you get my drift.
The overiding thing here is learning and getting involved. Yes the neximage is technically a toucam (but to my mind not as good), the meade dsi is a dedicated camera for dso's.
I want to see improvement, a lousy shot at first that someone like iceman or asimov then points you in the right direction re technique and processing and then the next time out, you have improved heaps. You feel good, we feel good, we are all winners from the experience!!
That is what it is about.
Obviously a hand held digicam on an untracked dob is a lot harder to take images with. A single shot from a normal camera even harder. A neximage or meade dsi is easier. All of this is taken into consideration.
So please remember the "spirit" of what this is about!
