The Milky Way at Lostock

Hi all

This image was taken on Saturday night during site reconnaissance for IISAC2008.

It's 11 x 6 min exposures, ISO800 with the Canon 350D + Sigma 17-70mm @ 17mm. Piggybacked on the EQ6/ED80 combo, guided with a DMK21AU04.
Dark subtracted, no flats.

Conditions were nice and dark with good transparency, but it was very windy with horrible seeing, causing guiding to have a few problems. Luckily with the short focal length it didn't ruin any frames.

Unfortunately as the Milky Way set, a tree started creeping into frame on the bottom right corner, causing the very dark patch.

LOL Mike now that's unusual, walking trees huh?
Strong roots no doubt.

The dark skies certainly help with the colour don't they.

Mike, tree or no tree, that is a fine image indeed, I just love those widefield iamges.

Lovely clear image Mike. So much up there to image. where to start is the problem. The wide field seems to be the way to go.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll definitely try again at IISAC2008 - this time without the tree.

Problem is, the milkyway is on its way down so there'll be even less time to capture it before it sets behind the mountain.

Hi from MelD, a rank outside newbie. All I can contribute at this stage is to report that I have modified my 12" Lightbridge to an EQ mount and have today taken delivery of a JMI Track-n-Train mod kit. I'll put that all together and report anything that might be of interest.
That, and I busted the bank with a TeleVue Nagler 4 12mm eyepiece. My "little" scope is a Skywatcher ED80 Pro on an EQ5 mount. I live in an appallingly light-polluted suburb of Sydney, right beside the M7 motorway, and it will be lovely if sometime I can get to find out what this gear will let me see. I'm getting a bit sick of just Jupiter and the Moon.
So there, I've broken the ice!

I'm only 20km from you in Hinchinbrook at the back of cowpasture road and the M7. I hear your pain regarding LP. You migh want to consider narrowband.
