Thumbs up Jupiter and GRS in nice seeing - 30/07

Hi all

Finally had some luck with the seeing, despite the jetstream looking ominous. The temperature dropped quickly after sunset but the active cooling helped bring my mirror down to ambient temperature. The seeing started off below average but settled nicely for a period of an hour or so until the jetstream kicked in at about 11pm, not helped by the temperatures which dropped a further degree in the space of 10 minutes.

I missed the best of the GRS but it was nice to see what it looked like - it's been a while since I've been able to image it in better than average seeing.

There appears to be another spot approaching the GRS at the same latitude as the LRS did - it even appears to be the same size as the old LRS but it's just not red/orange in the middle. What is it?

12" Newt, 5x powermate, DMK21AU04. 30fps for ~52 seconds in each channel.

There may be more from the session coming later but these are probably from the best of the conditions.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Mike,
Great work, best I have seen with 5x very sharp and not over processed.

Reworked my 3x from the 30th. Took your advice with the curve adjustment. Used the curves adjustment within Astra Image Pro to lower it a bit, made a major difference, not up to your standard but I am working on it.

Regards
Trevor

Very nice Mike, with lots of detail all over. 52 secs seems a lot for each channel. How long do the filter changes take?

Thanks for the comments, guys. Much appreciated. It sure was nice to be back out in it again. It's been a month since i've seen the GRS.

Thanks Graeme. It takes me about 10 seconds to change filters, change gain and re-focus. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

There's always going to be rotation between the colour channels which can be fixed when RGB aligning. If I go for longer, it just means more of a red limb and blue limb when I align on the features. But if it means more data for a better image of the features, then it's worth it.

I'll usually also align on the limbs though, and then take a feathered selection of the limbs and paste it over the main image to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
