NGC 6188 in Ara

After ten years of attempting to photograph this magnificent deep space object, I couldn't hold on any longer and had to share what I've done so far.

This is my first image in a year and my first attempt at narrowband processing.

NGC 6188 mapped to the Hubble palette of sulphur II for red, hydrogen alpha for green and oxygen III for blue.

I still need to blend in the LRGB stars to get rid of the purple stars and replace them with natural colours.

This is 24 hours of data, 8 hours in each channel of hydrogen alpha, sulphur II and oxygen III, captured over 18 nights in June, July and August.

I hope you like what I've done thus far.

Click here for larger resolution image.

Comments, critique, lynching, etc., most welcome.

That's a fabulous image Humi. I can see the pro photographer in you in that image.

Just superb! Blew my socks off. The three-dimensionality - the feeling for seeing what is actually up there - overlapping clouds and cavities and the like - is magnificent. Top notch.

Lovely! Brings out the 3D appearance better than I've seen in most images of this object.

Thanks, so much, Mark. I'm glad you think so.

Greg,

That's awfully kind of you. Though this isn't the full frame image, I had to crop (it's full height, minus non-registered black areas) the image. That's where my photographic brain takes over and does this subconsciously without even thinking about it. I'm so grateful to be blessed with this gift.

Troy,

Cheers, mate. It's good to be back in the saddle. I've got data going back one year which is just sitting waiting to be processed.

Mike and Trish,

Thank you, so much! I am glad that you can see the three dimensionality of the ribbons of hydrogen alpha.

Steve,

Thanks, heaps! I guess the many hours of data and careful processing has helped in that regard.

Rob,

I've been wanting to do justice to this region (in my own way) for so, so long! I'm glad that you think so, too. Cheers.

Slawomir,

I like concentrating on one object at a time. It was your wonderful bicolour rendition that spurred me on to keep grabbing data -- so, thank you! I keep going back to yours to soak it in.
