30 Binocular Galaxies

It was crystal clear here after the rain and I spent an hour outside (12:45 to 1:45 am today) with my 20x80 binocular triplets. Used a banana lounge to support my head and elbows.
I saw the following objects. (28 are galaxies)

* These objects were the hardest to see.
s Used a map to check the positions of these small planetary nebula.

In the North
Messier 31, 32, 110, 33, 74*, 77
NGC 752, 7662s

In the West
M 2, 15, 30
NGC 7293, 7009s

In the South
SMC and LMC
NGC 6744*, 6752, 104, 330, 346, 371, 362, 1313, 1261, 1553, 1566*, 1763, 1850, 2070, 2018
(Saw lots of LMC NGC objects, but only counted the above 4)

In the East
M 42, 78, 79, 41, 45
NGC 1435, 1851, 1792*, 1808*, 1977, 2024*, 2451, 2477

Overhead
NGC 55, 300, 7793, 247*, 253, 288, 1097, For Dwarf Gxy*, 1269, 1316, 1365, 1399, 1380, 1350*, 1360, 7582*

Tried 1499 and 7331 but they were too low in the sky.

The Fornax Dwarf Galaxy, PGC 10093, was definitely seen this time.

* Used a Lumicon UHC filter to confirm the California neb.
+ Desktop Universe provided NGC numbers for the LMC objects seen, they were not all know for memory.

Damn Glenc u sure did see a lot! My 20x80 Triplets arrived today so I'm going down Murwillumbah way tonight to have a squiz. I'll let u know what I find... although chances are unless its something really obvious I wont know what it is anyway heheh... Wish me luck!

Hey Glenc, just came back from my first look. Man those binoculars absolutely hammer my 50mm Tasco telescope! (No big suprise as the Tasco is rubbish, but the amount of improvement is astounding) I just wanted to know, when u see nebulae through your binoculars, do you see the coloured clouds or is that only something that crazy $$$ telescopes can see? I saw Jupiter and a bunch of things in the Milky Way area, which from my star program look to be NGC 6231 (In the Scorpio constellation) and M7 and others that I cant be bothered trying to look up...

when u see nebulae through your binoculars, do you see the coloured clouds

Sorry, you only see colour on a few neb like M42 and only with a big scope.

Excellent lists Glen! Great way to spend a night, finding galaxies with binos! And then also taking a closer look with the scope.

I am a great admirer of Edward Emerson Barnard.
He was great at finding objects with low surface brightness.
NGC 6822 is not easy with 20x80s even when nearly overhead.

There are 383 NGC galaxies brighter than visual magnitude 11 and 162 of these are south of declination zero. Most of these should be visible in 20x80 binoculars, but the ones near bright stars will not be easy. (46 are brighter than mag 10.)

The attached list contains 162 southern galaxies.
It is based on Bob Erdmann's work.
