Couple test shot

Hi All,
Just fooling around with my new LP filter. Here are a couple of single frames from my 8" newt, Eta Carina is a single frame @ ISO1600 guided 120Sec exposure, canon 1000D. Omega cent is a 60 second guided exposure, both processed in Photoshop CS5, mainly just to correct the colour due to the LP Filter.
Neither has received much levels or curves adjustment so i think they look ok. Plenty of noise though, but its only single exposures.

I have to say the LP filter really does make a difference.
Thanks for looking.

Hi Goran,
Great results for single subs.
I have 3 questions...
1) I take it the 1000D is spectrum modified can you confirm?
2) What is the LP filter? Is it the IDAS LP from Hutech?
3) 2" ? 1.25" ? On camera type?

Ok there's more than 3 questions snuck in there but you get the jist of it I guess.

How much LP do ou get down there - say in comparison to Melbourne suburbs? Did the LP filter allow you more acquisition time before being flooded with unwanted skylight?

Damn.. more questions! Sorry.
Bruce.

Haha ask as many questions as you like

The 1000D is astro modded, i pulled only the IR block filter out.
The LP filter is the Astronomik CLS CCD 2". I bought the 2" over the clip-in because eventually I want to move to mono CCD imaging and I want to still use this filter.
As for the severity of LP here in a Melbournian suburb, well, have a look at the first picture below. It is 60secs, taken last night, versus with the LP filter about 10 mins later. No moon, bit of humidity though. The LP filter gives a blue cast, but much darker skies. The blue is easy to remove.
With the 8" F4, within 4-5 minutes the histogram gets white clipped ( without the filter ). Very bad at times.
Im hoping that when more homes are built around me, some of the direct light from the street will be blocked, and should help a little.
I hope I answered your questions Bruce.

Thanks Rowland. I meant that from the point of view that I hadn't planned to go out last night, and was a quick setup for the sake of testing out the LP filter which I've had for three weeks+ and wanted to see if it was a waste of money or not I didn't actually plan to take a set of exposures of any particular object ( which is a shame ). My guidescope dewed up after only a couple hours anyway. I need dew heaters for winter now.
Will this money pit ever end?

Unlikely... but they are very good images and you should not be discouraged.

Great shots, Goran, particularly with that Eta Carina shot being a single exposure!

Awesome Goran, thanks for all the responses,I just wanted to know how much difference it made and with your before and after shots, the difference is remarkable. They say the IDAS LP filter has a lot less impact on colour balance, but most software can get rid of that in short order.
I could tell your 1000D was modded from the first carina image.
I just got a used one that I will modify in the coming days, It's worth the effort and gives much better results.
Once again, thanks for putting up with the interrogation.
Clear skies!
Bruce.

Hi Bruce,

I did the same with my 1000D, bought it used on ebay and went to town on it Definitely worth it.
If you need any help ( not that I'm an expert ) feel free to PM me.

Looks great Goran,
Is your camera cooled as well. Not a lot of noise given the night time temps we are having in Melbourne.
My 40D showed a fair bit of noise, I will try and cool the camera in the fridge tonight and re-do some darks and then re-process my Eta taken on Sunday night.
Bo

Actually it's not cooled, I don't recall what the temp on the chip actually was, but you are right, pretty mild last weekend and pretty warm Monday and Tuesday.
I thought about cooling, but honestly I'm not sure that will happen any time soon.
