Hey everyone!

I have a little project of mine to share with you all. Its a bracket I've been making to hold my video camera up to the eyepiece of my scope. Its very dodgy and crappy, but I'm just a teenager, get off my back!

It doesn't work properly yet (actually, the camera doesn't allign at all with the lense, as the hole to hold my 32mm eyepiece was drilled too big as the correct drill size wasn't available), but I'm working on some fixes for it.

Anyone else here tried building one of these things before? And if so, got any pointers?

Here's one I made. 100% success.....but the camera tripod I had the scope on was too flexy and my results weren't any better, I drilled my hole with a forstner bit usually reserved for mounting cupboard hinges.

Can you get the camera to focus on anything in the EP (eyepiece) when it's attached to the scope? (whether on the mount or hand held)

You set the camera to focus on infinity when you do afocal stuff.

Here one I made ages ago on my old Refracter.
Made out of some scrape aluminium bar .

Note the camera strap raped around the scope just incase.

Good job on yours there.If it works and saved you money that's all that counts.

Try a free ware program called Irfanview to get your pics smaller..

There is a very good resize and batch resize and compression function in it.

I'm bringing this old thread back. Does anyone else have any camera bracket designs (or know of a website with any)? I might have a crack at making one this weekend (couldnt be bothered buying one) and need ideas, tips etc.

Any images of how the bracket goes around the EP would be good too.

Is that a battery chewing minolta Dimage7 there !! I still have mine, I don't use it anymore. Just think I paid $1700 to keep it in the storage cupboard. I could never workout whether or not it was in focus. Mr Iceman has the bracket I bought for it after the one I made was a complete disaster!

Simon I have always been fascinated by this design - dont know how practical it is? might damage/crush??? http://www.astrosurf.com/astroscope/tips/afocal4/ok.htm EDIT: sorry! of course this only for cameras were the lens only moves internally (like the Nikon CoolPix 4500 in the pics)!! I'm not sure about video cameras? is their any external movement of lens? i have no experience with them. The cp 4500 and its earlier versions 995 990 ect. were conveniently designed for also using with microscopes, and were very popular with bird photographers - hence the availabilty of a few quality screw straight on ep's - they screw into the 28mm thread that also exists for adding adapters like the teleconvertors ect. their is a great pic of this set up in Shevill Mathers "Moonlighting" article/column in S&S july/august 05 page 62. he also has a pic of a video camera connector there.

From left to right...for the 60mm refractor...fit's onto the star diagonal for the 6" refractor.....For the 12.5" newt. All out of 2mm aluminium sheet.

Simon, I emailed this image to a club member who happens to be a fitter & turner. He managed to make me one in less than 1 week. As there is a bit of machining to do, I let him have the job. He's turned out, (sorry for pun), erect image finders from 1/2 bino's, extension tubes, 2" Crayford style focusers etc etc. He's a 'gem' to have in our club.
HTH. The E/Pc bracket, he made from spring steel, with a small steel plate welded inside at the bottom, for extra strength/thickness for the nut. It's sized/shaped to suit E/P you'll use most, & felt/rubber lined. Should fit others tho. It works well.
