Farmers are so nice.

I got permission to shoot on this private property last year. This weekend I asked again if I could shoot out there and was again allowed.

This guy doesn't know me from a bar of soap and owes me nothing, yet still was happy to let me have access to his beautiful valleys and mountains.

You know, it never hurts to ask and there is something special about a stranger doing something nice for you. I only hope to be as good to others who need my help.

Anyway, I shot an all-night time-lapse in minus temperatures and was covered head to toe in frost as was all the equipment. I even had to put the battery pack and intervalometer in the esky with the cables hanging out to stop them from freezing up. The LCD on the intevalometer didn't work all night but it still did it's job.

While I work on the hundreds of RAW images I took that night, here's a teaser frame where the local shooter came past on the dirt road and stopped to talk with his brake lights on, illuminating my tree...

Time-lapse coming soon so stay tuned folks. I'll put it on ASIGN when it's ready. I am SO happy with the 16-35L f2.8on the 5D MK II! So much better than the old 400D Cropped frame with the 18-55EFS f3.5.

The second shot is fantastic, great composition and the sky is to die for! congratulations on a great shot and I hope to see more coming!

Intervalometers die quickly in the cold, I've had the same problems here.

Thanks Luis. I think I am going to use my insulated frij bag to keep all that stuff in, with a couple of woolen sleeved rubber hot water bottles. They keep heat all night!

Nice shot Barry, can't wait to see the timelapse stuff. Are you going to run it with any music?

I've been interested in t/l just recently, but with a Point and Shoot, its difficult.

cheers Norm

the second one is the best.it would of been a nicer shot if the cloud wasn't blocking the milkyway

I like both of them but of my preference the second one is better, it seems to have a surreal effect to it as though it is painted. It is hard to explain though. The redness of the tree in the second shot looks like it is a feature of the tree whereas the first shot acutally looks like the light shining on the tree.

Excellent pictures.

Thanks all! Normally I don't like clouds in the way of my astro, but in the case of time-lapse it adds a wonderful depth dynamic in the videos.

It's going to take a while. They are all RAW images and need to be processed JUST RIGHT!

Baz.

Very nice. I like #2 as well because of the colours of the foreground.

Thanks again everyone! I posted this to half a dozen places and have had the most overwhelming response I have ever had for any one image.

Over 60 emails in 24 hours, each representing several responses on the forums.

Amazing what a bit of annoying traffic can do to a dark-site sometimes....

Thanks again all!

Baz.

I like the darker one. it looks more like nightime when it was taken.

I went with the lighter one, the clouds and road together balance out the shot perfectly, the darker one is also great but for me puts a small bias on the sky at the expense of the beautiful landscape .

Thanks guys. I got them both printed 60 x 40 cm. They both look great, but I think the lighter one is the winner.

How did I miss that?!!! I guess the title of the thread must have tricked me.

Amazing images, Baz, really well done! The time lapse should look great with the thin clouds.

Is it crescent Moon softly lighting the ground?

Cheers,
Alex
