I had a couple of spare lengths of aluminium, so I decided to make a square out of them. Attached is a compass as shown and as you can see the square butts up against the legs of my G11 tripod. Very easy to get the correct alignment for the SCP. As the legs in the G11 are either Aluminium or some sort of composite, there is not magnetic field that can affect the compass. I just got fed up with trying to align the tripod using the "ballpark" method when away at camps, and decided that there had to be an easier way. When you combine this with using a Wixy inclinometer, one is pretty well aligned straight up, and only a minimal adjustment may be needed to achieve excellent polar alignment.
I work on the theory that necessity is the mother of invention. All for making things easier. I know there are quite a few people here that have Losmandy mounts and they may find the idea useful. It will also work for other mounts of course, as long as the legs are non ferrous.
