Red Bull Air Race

I'm getting despirate, trying to find info on the Red Bull Air Race that's coming to Perth. I know it's a long shot (being an astronomy forum not a aerobatic forum!) but does anyone know any info on it? Their website is a little useless (lacking useful information about the event/s) and the free-call phone numbers simply go to voice mail!

It looks like such a great event that we're so lucky to have turn up over here in Perth, yet seems so poorly organised with respect to letting the public know what's going on when. Typical government organisation I guess.

Any help appreciated!

Roger.

I have seen TV commercials for it, but little else. It looks like pylon racing, where the aircraft fly around a basic oval circuit defined by those big inflatable pylons. In the old old days (Before WW2), the pylons were metal. I don't think it would matter though...

Clear skies,
Shane

It's much more than pylon racing. Its a one man at a time, against the clock circuit in aerobatic aircraft (e.g. Extra300) with aerobatics thrown in. The circuit isn't oval and the manoeuvres are spectacular. The footage I saw was shot from the air, water and within the cockpit of the competing aircraft. The reason that the pylons are inflatable fabric, is that the planes actually pass between the pylons at obscenely low level, often knife edged and occasionally they hit the pylons (without loss of control of the aircraft). Here's a bit of it on you tube

It is stunning stuff.

One of the pilots came out to WA for the air show at Cunderdin a year or 2 back, he did amazing stuff - not just loops and all that, but spinning on his prop like a helecopter, straffing along almost sidewase and upside down... manouvers that a full size plane just shouldn't be able to do! (I've seen RC helle's do cool stuff, but that's RC).

I'm really looking forward to it, provding I find the info..

Hi Roger,
We are hoping to go to the air race as well, looks like it will be quite spectacular. From the main web site there is a link to www.westernaustralia.com/redbullairrace/ which has all the details like parking, road closures, public transport, best viewing, etc. We shall most likely be on the South Perth side. Have fun

Wade - I've hunted around that web site but can't find any details on what times the actual races run on which days? Am I missing the obvious?

I have found the general times of 09:00 - 17:00, but surely the races can't go all that time on all 3 days ?

Roger.

I rang the WA visitors centre in Forrest Place and they provided the following: general heats (eliminations) on the 17th and 18th between 9.00am and 4.00pm. Finals are on the 19th between 12.00 and 2.00pm. They do not know if anything is racing during the morning however. Probably watch the papers during the lead up week.

Looks like there will be a detailed guide in Thursday's "Western Australian ". Went past the South Perth foreshore today and saw the portable "Air control tower" and all the other preparations. All looks impressive and I think the Perth setting will look good but for the pilots there's not much room for error

In case it's of use to anyone, this is the reply I received from them via email. I have a very useful PDF map of the area they sent with the reply, but it's 1.2mb so I can't upload it here. Email me if you want it and I'll send it through. Shame they don't have this very useful information on their very un-useful website.

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the 2006 Red Bull Air Race World Series
to be held from 11am to 2pm on Sunday 19 November over the picturesque
waters of the Swan River at Sir James Mitchell Park, South Perth.

The Red Bull Air Race is a high performance aviation sport, which sees the
world's best race pilots fly between a series of 20 metre high inflatable
pylons, known as air gates, in a predetermined sequence in the fastest
possible time.

The racetrack extends between the Narrows Bridge and the Causeway. The best
vantage point will be from Sir James Mitchell Park, South Perth.

A free event for the entire family, the Red Bull Air Race will see South
Perth buzz with activity, with six huge screens ensuring people are part of
the action. Highlights from the previous races and interviews with the
pilots will be screened, and race commentary, music and entertainment will
ensure the race is an event not to be missed.

In celebration of the Red Bull Air Race World Series coming to Australia,
Perth will host an Air Festival from Friday 17 November through to Sunday 19
November. The Air Festival celebrates aviation excellence. It showcases the
history and heritage of aircraft with demonstrations of speed and precision
in aviation including flyovers, formation flying, and displays.

Air Festival Timetable

Friday 17 November 2006
10.00am to 4.00pm Air Festival Aerial Activity*
Red Bull Air Race – Practice Sessions

Saturday 18 November 2006
10.00am to 4.00pm Air Festival Aerial Activity*
Red Bull Air Race – Qualifying Sessions

Sunday 19 November 2006
9.00am to 10.30am Public Paddock Walk, Langley Park
9.30am to 11.00am Air Festival Aerial Activity*
11.00am to 12.00pm Red Bull Air Race Pre-Event Show
12.00pm to 1.45pm Red Bull Air Race, Rounds One and Two
1.45pm to 2.00pm Red Bull Air Race Podium Presentation – Perth event
and World Series Winner
2.00pm to 3.00pm Air Festival Aerial Activity*

*Aerial Activities
Those with neck injuries beware! The Air Festival will have you looking
skyward for extended periods with Chuting Stars parachute jumpers, dancing
helicopters performing a choreographed spectacle, and a smoky chopper.

The Air Festival aerial demonstrations include Edge 540 aircraft - the same
aircraft as used by the Red Bull pilots - defying gravity with low level fly
overs, CJ-6A Nanchang war-birds in formation flying sequences, AT-6 Texan
war-birds executing formation flying, and Australia’s own Qantas Boeing 767
in a low level fly over at 1000 feet.

The top guns will be showcasing their skills as the Australian Defence Force
presents low level Hornet F/A-18 flyovers and formation flying, and Hawk BAe
jets doing fly pasts and formation flying. The Red Beret army parachuting
team will jump from CC08 Caribou planes with smoke and flags.

Displays
The Air Festival displays will be located on Sir James Mitchell Park, South
Perth, near Coode Street and Mill Point Road and will be home to a
collection of aviation displays and exhibits.

Check out the Walk of Racers – a walk through display featuring Red Bull Air
Race information, pilot profiles, photos and statistics. A life-size Red
Bull Air Race model plane will be on display - get up close to a replica
plane that the world’s best pilots will be racing. If that gets your
adrenalin pumping and you’re feeling brave, jump in the flight simulator and
experience first hand what it feels like to take flight in a P-51 Mustang or
a helicopter.

The Australian Defence Force Recruiting Trailer has all the information you
need to kick start your career with the Defence Force. For budding pilots
visit the Department of Education and Training Display. There are several
schools, universities and colleges throughout WA that run courses in
aviation studies and this display will steer you in the right direction
towards an exciting career as a pilot.

The Aero Modellers of WA is a must see for small model aircraft
enthusiasts. The Bullcreek Aviation Museum display, The Parachuting Club,
Helicopter Flying School and Glider Federation will be on hand too, with
plenty of aviation material to help you soak up the atmosphere and get G-ed
up for the Red Bull Air Race action.

The best news is that this is free to the public and will be open from the
following times*:
Friday 17 November 2006: 9.00am – 5.00pm
Saturday 18 November 2006: 9.00am – 5.00pm
Sunday 19 November 2006: 8.00am – 5.00pm

*All activities are correct at the time of printing and will be dependant on
favourable weather conditions.

Langley Park will be transformed into an airport for the duration of the
event. On Sunday 19 November, Langley Park will host a free Paddock Walk
from 9.00am until 10.30am. Members of the public will have a chance to meet
the pilots and get autographs.

There will be public service areas located throughout Sir James Mitchell
Park during the event - selling food, drinks and merchandise. You can also
purchase official Red Bull Air Race merchandise online at
www.redbullairrace.com.

For full details of road closures and parking stations check The West
Australian's Red Bull Air Race guide on Thursday 16 November or visit the
Red Bull Air Race website for more details at www.redbullairrace.com.

This is apparently the final event on this years calendar - the world champ for 2006 will be decided in Perth - not a bad way to organise their first event in Australia!

Truly amazing skills

I work in an office overlooking the Swan river so have been trying to work whilst the pilots have been doing their practice sessions this week - very distracting. The speed, skills and G's they are pulling is impressive.
I would love to be there for the racing but, Murphy being alive and well, I am on a plane heading east tomorrow morning for work.
