horsehead

hello,
last night had some very serious winds so I'm surprised I managed to get anything at all.

this horsehead nebula image is a stack of 6X 634 seconds at Iso 800
c9.25 f6.3 autoguided
Canon EOS 20Da
cropped

I think i'll get better results by sticking to ISO 800 but increasing the exposure time, at least 15 minutes per image i think.

cheers
frank

incidentally...

Has anyone noticed how the horsehead appears to be looking at a baby horsehead in the red veil (left of main Horsehead in this picture) ?

Nice image Frank

What's causing the grain?

(unless that's just my screen?)

Top effort. Nice image scale

Hi Matt,
It's been left a bit grainy on purpose (though the jpg compression slaughters it a bit...) to help keep some of the sharpness and definition of the original, i only used unsharop mask and then "dust and scratch noise reduction or median noise reduction (cant recall exactly after working through al possible combinations of original with/without unsharp mask then all combinations with either dust and scratches or median and then at 1 pixel or 2 pixel ......to see if I could pick up any difference...
i couldnt really so i went with this one.

noiseware which i use on big nebulas might have altered it a bit too much...
might need to get noise ninja...

the mini HH is a lot clearer on my original high Res, I'm sure others would have noticed it on their own pics before. I just noticed it myself this mornin g (all half-awake that I am now...)

Hi Frank, thats a top image of the Horsey and junior, nice colours and a lot of detail.
I had that wind as well the other night. I half setup then changed my mind. It was a different story last night though, conditions were quite good I thought.

great work

Thanks guys,
it actually doesnt look too bad after processing with noiseware at lightest settings

in fact I'm a bit happier with this thanks for everyone' sfeedback

here's the smoother-yet not too plastic- version at 900 pixels size.

I agree Jim that a bit more clor would be good. I pushed this one as far as I could. I had half hoped to image some more last night but needed to catch up on sleep.

I think I'll get better noise/signal ratio and colors as I end up stacking more...
Ahh well, next time!

cheers
frank

There's something about the pixelation i nthe post I dont quite understand, when I look at my jpg compressed image of 149K on the comp at home it looks fine but when I look at the one submitted to IIS it comes up with severe pixelation (especially noticeable on the bright stars). Anyone know what im doing wrong?
(I know about the save for web -that's what I used for the onriginal post of this thread, but didnt seem to make a difference...the compressed ones look very nice on my comp but now as downloaded from the attached thumbnail in the post)
odd

Frank,

Lovely images.

Have you desaturated the image at all? Normally this region appears to be red to purple.

Regards,
Humayun
