Running with Orion [now with more subs!]

'Tis the season and all

The first image is the result of about 30 minutes of data collected at Bretti a couple of months back that I've finally taken a crack at...credit must go to AstroJason for his encouragement and tutoring with the processing of this, a big thank you

Usual kit...Canon 1100D (unmodded) attached to WO Zenithstar 71+reducer on my EQ6. This is a stack of 15x 2 minute subs for the scene, and 10x 2 second subs for the core, both at ISO1600.

There's certainly more to bring out in there, but I'm not happy with the noise situation, so I'd like to see how it looks with another hour or so on the sensor...

Edit: I've added a bunch more subs gathered last weekend, bringing the total subs to 58x 2 minutes (plus the same core subs)...and included as the second image. Certainly quenches the noise a good bit more, even though the ambient temperature was over 10C warmer, giving me noisier subs, and I could probably use a little more stretching

Oooh nice. Look at all that background dust. A lot of that gets lost here in the dreaded orange glow. At that rate you could probably pick up the witch head near Rigel.

Great Dunk, you've really brought out that dust between trapezium and running man.

Thanks chaps! Feeling like I need more subs but I reckon summer might interfere with my data collection watch this space

Then I can move on to another target

That looks great mate, really like the detail in the core too. Adding those shorter subs for the core really makes a difference to the overall image. Hopefully the nights will be cool enough to not give us too much more noise over the coming summer. Looking forward to what you can do to this if you keep adding more and more data to it!

Thanks chaps! Yeah it really is testament to the dark sky out at Bretti, as the subject would have only just have breached 30 degrees altitude when I started taking the subs

I could definitely use another night on this at least...

That's an awesome image Dunk!
I've been eyeing off the ZenithStar 71 as a possible travel/guide scope. Looks like it's a great little scope!

Thanks Bret!

I really like the Zenithstar visually, I originally bought it for travelling with and it's earned its keep! Then when I got el cheapo DSLR I figured I'd give it a try. Besides the blue halos it seems to work out OK...it's no FLT but it is what it is just be aware that there are lighter scopes, it tips the scales at 2.7kg.
