Dollar free-fall panic buying of Camera Kit?

With the $ having crashed well below 70c US, I'm seriously considering buying some Camera kit from local grey-importers before the effects on price filter through. I wanted to wait for the Canon 5D MkII, but may opt for a 5d now to avoid price blowout.

Right now prices on L lens and Camera bodies through these grey (and Aust retail) outlets are the same as they were a few months back, but can it last.

Before I do succumb to panic buying is anyone aware of any reason why the $ difference might not impact (or not fully impact) price in Australian outlets...

help me NOT spend money

BUY...BUY.... BUY - tread over your own grandmother to get a deal now. At moment AUD is falling against almost all major currencies - US & Yen, our buying power will be reduced in most places - except for some of the SE asian currencies which aren't worth anything anyway

All offers "considered" Houghy mate. PM though if you're really keen.

But wait, how does this help me. I'm still caught in limbo between sense, insanity, and panic buying of more kit. There's a 5D out there, maybe with a 17-40L attached, that's calling to me BUY ME, BUY ME... in two months time the MkII will be out but it will cost $6K because your $ is now worth as much as the German Mark was in 1919.

cheers,

Rob

If you're going to buy a 5D, buy it now, prices are uncertain and volatile.
The new 1000D went up by $100 overnight at one supplier.

The only reason I see that the 5D may stay stable is that they have stock already and so they keep it at the old price.
The OS price of the 5D may drop slightly in Nov when the 5D MkII is released but this may be offset by the falling dollar by then on whatever new 5D stock they can get their hands on.

All the new Canon models will probably rise soon, as most probably Canon Lenses too.

Are you definitely after a FF body?
Or would you consider a 50D instead?

Thanks Andrew I was planning on keeping the 40D, I liked the idea of having both a FF and a cropped sensor. I've always had the feeling for landscapes that the 5D had a lower noise and smoothness I haven't seen from crop cameras. Happy to be convinced otherwise by the 50D if you think it's a match for the 5D

Don't you worry your pretty little head Dave, we've got enough cameras.

$1775 at D-D Photographics.

Ah if you have the 40D then stick with it, the extra MP don't add extra FOV so I'd seriously consider the superb 5D, it is an exceptional camera.
It's still one of the best Canon prosumer models they've made even though it's 3 years old.
The 5D Mk II will be better of course but at around $4k it has to be.

Yep .... looked seriously at an EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM + EF 2x II extender from DD in Sydney last night .... (still advertised at $2199 for 70-200 and $415 for the extender) whereas B&H have Grey Market 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM at 1649 USD and extenders for 300 USD , add shipping 120 USD (say)

B&H 70-200 = 1649
shipping = 120
===================
gives = 1819 USD convert to AUD (based on .67 USD / AUD) ==> $2714 ex GST .... not good .

Will be on the dognbone this avo to get a handle on DD's current price on the lens and the 2x II extender. Will let you all know if their webadvertised prices is still valid, in which case I'll likely buy a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM immediately despite being over my budget of $2000 since the AUD is not going to go back up as fast (to my target of > 0.90 USD/AUD) as it dropped or anytime soon (with market % rates falling , and the doom and gloom globally).

Will give DD a call end of next week if the AUD keeps going down the toilet.

I've had people recommend them but I've not personally dealt with them yet.

well my panic has run it's course resulting in the purchase of my very first "L" lens (the 24-105 F4 IS)... managed to get it at a great price, much less than what the HK sellers (who list in US$) are selling for, and from a bricks and mortar camera dealer... I blame all of you for fuelling my panic, at least that's what I'll tell my wife

...now I just got to wait till Tuesday to pick it up

Well done Rob, it's always worth bargaining with the local dealers, a lot of the time they're willing to match prices.

I suppose this gets Houghy off your back now.
