Hutech IDAS Light Pollution Suppression (LPS) filter

Hi all, I just need some inside info on these filters:

  • Hutech IDAS Light Pollution Suppression (LPS) Filter - 2" [LPS-P48]
  • Hutech IDAS LPS-V3 Narrowband Nebula Filter - 2" [LPS-V3-48]
Which one for imaging under urban skies with my ED80 and DSLR?

Michael

Hi, I have a Hutech IDAS LPS-V2 2". I use it for my CCD and DSLR. I do not image without it anymore. It's got good plotted transmission curves. By that I mean it allows enough of the important nm in for my imaging needs. I do not get any untowards reflection either.
There is some colour variation so I usually adjust the green channel to "normalise" the tones in post processing.
I reach skyglow too quickly on my DSLR without it.

Same here. I've had a lot of satisfaction shooting with my DLSR + IDAS from the city. Nothing beats a cold night at a dark sky site at new moon, but you can usually count the times you get to do that on two hands.

Highly recommend the IDAS. You do need to continuously tame blues and to a lesser extent greens when processing, but its still not too hard to get nice natural colour in the end. Worth checking out Peter Tan for prices http://www.tan14.com/gears.htm

No experience with nebula filter sorry. If its cutting many more frequencies than the IDAS I'd be cautious about how much more tricky it might make final colour balancing.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll look into getting a LPS-P48.

Just out of interest when you use the LPS filter, how long can your subs be? Can you take 600sec without skyglow problems?

Plenty of good info and example images on IIS - would be worth checking these out Michael. A lot of these link back into each other I expect - apologies if duplicates - just thrown together from a quick search.

I've tend to shoot mainly ISO 800 3min subs from the city (I'm 7km from centre of Bris Vegas), but lately been trying 5 mins and seems ok. I keep meaning to quantitate the Signal:Noise for different sub lengths, but haven't got around to it. Rosette from city wasn't too bad lately with 5 min subs (see Deep space image forum if interested). I would normally do 5 or 10min subs from a dark sky site with my setup.

Thanks for the links Rob, some good comparisons going on there.

I'm not too sure what the LPS-V3-48 would be like (the wavelength cutoff might be too much), so I might give that a miss and stick with the tried and tested LPS-P48 - the results speak for themselves.

I usually do 4 to 6 min subs at ISO 800 Modified Canon 350D. Once I set the tonal range in the image I am not left with too much "skyglow" residual. So the Hutech LPS 2 does its job. Without it I get severe sky glow at anything over 3min.
