Mike you can get a hood that folds back that screws into your lens/filter. its made of rubber. I don't think that they are that dear.

Mike,

Welcome to the Canon DSLR club, incredible cameras for the money. 58mm is standard for the Canon consumer lenses, the specialist lenses are generally bigger (= faster). It seems the 50mm f1.8 is pretty much mandatory as it is cheap ($140 plus p&p approx on ebay) fast (f1.8) and sharp. Normally this means $$$$. The other Canon lens I have had my eye on is the 100mm f2.8 macro again not to expensive and very sharp. After that you are into the L series lenses which are all $$$$. General advice is steer clear of zooms, even the Canon L zooms cannot match a prime for sharpness, having said that I use a 18-55 and 75-300 and get ok results piggyback if you stop down (at least two stops).

For Tech specs on lens perfomance. I thought long and hard about getting a lesser scope and a good camera lens or two but as you might have seen elsewhere I just blew if all on the Vixen kit. I might be able to get a f1.8 50mm prime if I'm good until Christmas...

BTW My comments re zooms are for astrophotography purposes, for "normal" use they can give good results.

Yes, I know it's not a Lowepro.. yes, I know it's not a $150 remote cable.. but i'm not intending to buy more lenses for a while. And i'm not intending to get full into astrophotography for a while. I want to use it for terrestrial just as much, if not more, than astrophotography at this stage.

So keeping it cheap, already spent $2k now so restraint is in order.

But next on the list are:
- Lens Hood
- Filters!

I know how to make a really cheap lens hood for that Canon 200mm f/1.8 lens that you are going to buy once you come to your senses and forget about restraint.

Mate i've got the kit here, (I bought two when I did the Corona beer shot, one was for you. I knew it would'nt be long before you got the 350D).

I just need to know if the 350D has a 2.5mm stereo plug or the 20D type 3 pin plug.
I'll also build you a cable for controling the 350D via DSLR Focus.

$1600 for the 'B' twin lens kit and interest free? My oh my that is tempting! DAMN YOU MIKE!

My friend actually lent me his 350D only last weekend (sucker!) to get aquanted with (well with it, and DSLR's in general). After only using it for around 24hours it really makes me want one; badly! It makes poor little point and shoots look like toys. It was great fun to play with, and the best thing is even with the stock 18-55mm lens that he had you just cant miss! I uploaded some of the shots I took (they are amatuerish, and I was playing, but still) here if anyone is interested. Dont mind the bordering attempts.

Im sure you will love this camera Mike. At the moment Im trying to talk myself into one, and out of one at the same time. Internal conflict!

Unfortunately I haven't had many opportunities over the last couple of months to use any imaging gear let alone the 50mm, but the couple of times I've used it when I first got it I've like it alot. Mind you I've only had a couple of EF zoom lenses to compare it to.

At that price it would have to be a must have lense...especialy for starter's.
