In actual fact it DOES work like that !
Focus and control of exposure is required of course but you have the right idea.
What mods have been done to the camera ?
Yep it does work like that I use a modified ToUCam, allthough it's semi-retired now (I mostly do deep sky with a new CCD camera now)
You plug it into the focuser, find focus, and start playing with the settings such as exposure time and gain etc.
I use a 5x Powermate with mine for planetary and lunar imaging, I got vastly superior results with that over using my old Meade 3x barlow, there was just no comparison.
Instead of the adapters the guy used I used a 1.25" film canister, just cut about 60-70% of it off. I will post a pic of it when I get home later today.
I had trouble using it on the sun but yet still need to test it out on lunar and planets.
It's probably best to begin with the 2x while you're getting familiar with the camera. It's also much more difficult to center a planet in a narrow field. With the 5x Jupiter takes up at least 1/3 of my screen as far as I remember, that doesn't leave much wriggle room. Depending on your tracking accuracy you may have to adjust quite often.

The mod shown is just fitting a nosepiece to the webcam. No long exposer mod etc.
IMHO I'd start with the prime focus and the x2 barlow until you gain some experience and practise with the imaging software.
