hi all, for imagers who are far enough away from their observatory, that they have to send their data to themselves, what software do you use and if you ZIP it up before sending, what compression software also?

I have no remote site but I’ve done a lot of remote transfers over the years (decades) and I think FTP would be my preferred transport protocol
Linux based servers should have a server active by default.

I suspect uplink bandwidth at the remote site will be a bottle neck in the transfer.

The school observatory I’m involved with has a NAS in the control room and another NAS back at the school with an rsync setup to replicate all data. They have a satellite link for data backhaul.

Gday Joshua,

I only have a computer with the remote telescope - every few nights I will use 7Zip for compressing all the image files and Filezilla for SFTP from remote to my home NAS.

Compression is excellent within 7zip and I can break up the resulting file into 700mb chunks for ease of recovery if anything becomes corrupt (not that it ever has!)

The site connection is 4G and with a Telstra 100GB plan there is plenty of data to play with there, never the less I always compress it before sending offsite.

Hi Josh,

I just use radmin or VNC for access and upload on a 25/5 NBN 60 gig of data plan. Everything is sent uncompressed and it all works. Most sessions are 2-4 gig of data and that happens on average three days a week. Never been an issue with the plan or the upload speed. It's fast and uploaded at most 15 minutes after transfer commencement.

Depending on your comms setup, you could look into something like syncthing.

I use this in my dome. The images get synced back to my main machine in the house soon after each image is taken (and the image is still on the dome machine too). Of course, you could also just fire up syncthing at the end of a session and let it sync everything at that time.
