16" Makeover Complete

The makeover is finally done.
The pics show

1 the 6 struts.
2 the finderscope mounted to one of the struts.
3 the new rocker box.
4 the new copper Argo stalk.
5 the stalk mounts.
6 the new primary compession springs.

Not much else is different exept the collimation locking screws have been modified to carry weights instead of wrecking collimation.

Cheers Kev.

Looking good, Kev. Great mods.

Would you tell us a bit more about the primary collimation locking screws - what have you done and its effect? (Or point me to the relevant thread if I've missed it, please).

I'll ask another recent BT-402 owner to have a look at this - great ideas to replicate.

That looks a great job Kev.
It's a shame you/we have to do these levels of modification to mass produced gear in order for the product to perform to our satisfaction.
C'est la vie for now! Hopefully mods like yours will filter down to GSO for their 2nd or 3rd gen' models.
I bet it is a beauty now though Kev - well done.

Thanks Chris and Eric for the comments
Eric the white plastic colimation lock screws have another job now as they carry counter balance weights.

I wont use the screws as a mirror cell lock because when you bring them to touch the cell they move collimation, not much but i love collimation the best i can get.
hope that helps a bit........cheers Kev.

I have just started looking at these 16" dobs with interest.
Can I ask why did you go with the GSO model over the Lightbridge - they seem to be roughly the same price, and the struts on the Meade look to be a bit better design re maintaining collimation?
this may have been a point laboured in other threads but as I say I'm a noob to this!
Cheers
Doug

Excellent work Kev, looks great.

Is the new rocker box considerably lighter now and easier to move about?

Thanks Kev, I understand completely. I only use the collimation lock screws during transport.

Doug i chose the GSO over the lightbridge for the reasons of the alt trunnion bearings mainly, Both the gso and the lightbridge were the same price when i purchased it.
But if the lightbridge had 4 trusses instead of 3 which surely would not of been to much more cost to produce then i may of swung the other way ,but i,m glad i went the gso way........cheers Kev.

Norm the rocker box may slightly be lighter but with those gussets in there it made a great deal of difference in sideways movement which now makes the argo navis more accurate.
I would go to say also the original rocker boxs should all have gussets on them due to there size......cheers Kev.

Thanks Graham it has seen a few summers now.
The poor 10" lightbridge is now obsolete sitting in the corner as an ornament.

Cheers Kev.
