Im gonna have a go at narrowband imaging this weekend with my stf8300m and ed80 (reduced 0.85x). Any suggestions for a target? Something nice and easy that won't be near the moon would be good. I was thinking the LMC but it rises a bit late still I think.
Tim what part of the sky do you prefer? In the east, right now the Helix Nebula is an option in narrowband. The Tarantula is above 40 degrees from about 1:50am in the south south east, but with astro dawn around 4:30am it does not give you much time and you would need multiple nights.
A lot of my western sky is blocked by a 2m retaining wall and my north is blocked by a tree. So I have from NNE to SSW. Helix is a bit small for ~600mm fl isn't it? I'm looking for somthing nebulous that will look impressive with NB. I'm pretty keen on doing the Lmc so might work on it after 1:00 for a few nights, just need another target to do until that time of night.
If your West and North aren't good then, as Glen said, go for the Tarantula. It's pretty big and bright and it looks great in NB.
You can try for the Helix, though as you say it is small. It's also very faint but there aren't a huge number of options for big and bright NB targets at this time of year.
