Astrophotography Competition

The Astronomical Society of New South Wales Inc. (ASNSW) invites you to submit entries to the Astrophotography Competition to be held during the 14th South Pacific Star Party, March 31 - April 2, 2006.

The categories of entry are:

  1. Solar system - moon, planets, sun and comets.
  2. Nebulae.
  3. Galaxies.
  4. Globular clusters and open clusters.
  5. Wide field images, meteors and auroras.

A prize and certificate will be awarded for a grand prize winner across all categories and prizes and certificates will be awarded for first and second place in each individual category. These will be awarded on the Saturday afternoon during the Star Party. The overall winner and the five first prize winners will each have their images published in the 'New' SKY & SPACE Magazine.

A brief statement on the judging process.
Astroimages will be judged on technical merit and aesthetic appeal. The latter is of course subjective, and will be left to the discretion of the judges. Technical and aesthetic issues assessed by judges will include image composition; degree of technical difficulty; quality of the image given the equipment used; quality of image processing.

Conditions of Entry

  1. The entrant must be an amateur astrophotographer.
  2. All images must have been taken by the entrant after March 13, 2005.
  3. Each entrant is limited to a maximum of 3 photographs/images per category.
  4. The entrant must supply full name, address and contact phone or e-mail
  5. The entrant or their nominated representative must deliver all entries in person to the South Pacific Star Party Registration Desk by 10:00 am, Saturday April 1, 2006. Entries sent by post or email will not be accepted.
  6. Images are to be supplied in print form (preferably A4, but no larger), printed or mounted on stiff paper/thin cardboard suitable for wall display.  Images must also be supplied on floppy disk/CD/USB drive in maximum file size 500kB  JPG format for display on a PC/Laptop at the Star Party and full resolution TIFF, BMP or JPG format for evaluation by the judges (and possibly for subsequent publication).
  7. Entrants must supply a separate short description detailing the image subject, the telescope, the camera/lens, the duration and number of exposures and full details of the image processing. This should be documented clearly and legibly and handed in with the entry.
  8. The Judges decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
  9. Copyright shall remain with the photographer and the ASNSW shall have the right to use the images as it sees fit with acknowledgement of the photographer.
