Despite some of his human frailties Hawkey was one of the giants of the Australian political stage in recent history, if 38 years ago is recent.
RIP Bob.

I ended up working at the "New" Parliament house between 1987 and 1992 and had several encounters with the great man in the corridors and lifts etc during that time but my fondest memory of him was as a 16 year old and a member of the very first Australian Youth Science Forum (then known as the Australian Science Summer School) in Jan 1984. Here I got to meet Bob Hawke, when he officially opened the forum, his first public engagement for 1984. He was so genuine, friendly and the peoples Prime minster feeling was palpable. His passion for education was undeniable.
RIP Bob Hawke
Mike

Some nice stories on this Post by people that have meet Bob Hawke.
Sadly, I never did, but do appreciate his service to bettering the lives of people in our country.
He was often mocked for saying that by 1990 (or was it 1991), that he would eliminate child poverity. It may not have happened, but he came closer to doing so than any PM before or since.
If there is a racetrack in the afterlife, look for him there.

A sad passing but humans die.
I only met him once.
The Law firm I worked for handled a defamation suit for him...I dont remember the result but know we always won so I guess we got him what he wanted. I just sat near him in court and have no special memories..just another day in court with a client. I am sure he was not PM at that stage.
An interesting person.

I expect a great deal of his power came from being able to have a beer with someone...but he must have been good on the books as you need more than drinking ability to stand on top of the heap.
