Comparison pics 1000D modded vs 1100D unmodded

Hi all,

My friend Pete Scully from South Africa sent me these comparison shots between his old Canon 1000D and his new Canon 1100D. He removed the IR filter from his 1000D.

We wanted to share these with you, as the comparison says a lot about the benefits of modifying your camera, even if it is a much older model.

Pete says all parameters (ISO, subs) and processing steps were kept the same between frames. The only difference is some images were shot on the subsequent night.

I wonder who is doing these mods these days?

The benefit seems pretty clear. It can only improve my 1000D. As it is, I only use it to take pics of the dog!
If anyone knows who is doing the mods these days, I'd be glad to hear.

Peter

Pete just let me know he used this guide. He says;
"Just needs patience, a steady hand, a few small screw drivers, a dust free environment and a little courage. I printed the pages and placed the screws on the relative pics so re-assembly was easy as pie. The only real concern is to ensure that the sensor is CLEAN before re-assembly."

I think I already fail at the 'steady hand' bit...

It should be noted that there are two filters in the newer (>350D) Canon cameras.
Filter #2 is a colour balance filter and has some UV-IR cut off. This is usually the filter which is removed to dramatically improve the response to Ha.
However there's another filter Filter #1 which is an antiAlias/ dust filter - this is usually left in the camera. I've found that this filter is also a UV-IR cut filter! and as such blocks everything below 400nm and above 700nm.
So you need to be careful how you specify a "full spectrum mod".
I've arrange for this second filter to be removed and the sensor re-spaced (to maintain focus with standard lenses) for spectroscopy work.
There's a lot of very useful data to be had between 370nm and 400nm.

Hi guys,

FYI, Pete has just created a document on how to clean the CMOS chip as well. The document is located here; http://www.terrapins.co.za/PDF%27s.html
