Hi Peter,
It would help with suggestions from others to known what sort of exposure duration, ISO/gain etc.. & what gear you used for the image, but at first suggestion try reducing the exposure time and/or ISO/Gain and see what you see.
... If you want to see the little guy in the middle then you'll need to go easy on the exposure/iso and/or try a darker location.
Also depending upon where you are in Melbourne, images can get washed out considerably due to the effects of light pollution reducing contrast significantly. Where we are in Melbourne the (artificial) sky brightness is not so good at 3130 µcd/m2, which is about 18x brighter than what it is at a truly dark location (~170 µcd/m2). You may be luckier than that depending on your suburb & local conditions- the further from the CBD the better.
