Dunlop by date

The attached file lists the globular clusters and galaxies found by James Dunlop in 1826 from Parramatta, NSW. It is sorted by the date and time that he found these 74 objects.
He observed with a 9" aperture telescope that was 9' long.
Its speculum mirror was equivalent to a modern 6" reflector.

Dunlop discovered an amazing 298 new southern deep sky objects in only 7 months, 28 in the Small Magellan Cloud (from 1 Aug to 6 Sep), 120 in the Large Magellan Cloud (from 3 Aug to 6 Nov), and 150 outside the two clouds: 67 open clusters, 51 galaxies, 23 globular clusters, 4 planetary nebulae, 3 nebulae and 2 dark nebulae.

Lacaille (1750-51), Dunlop (1826) and John Herschel (1834-38) were the first to make catalogues of southern deep sky objects.

Brilliant documentation
I never realised Dunlop discovered and documented so many objects in such a short period of time ( probably under candle light or oil lamps )
I’m curious to know if there are any additional portraits of Dunlop other than the one we all know and have seen ?

Yes, that’s the only portrait I’ve seen on various websites

I suppose he was commissioned by Brisbane as a “working class” citizen ( astronomer) so I don’t suspect there would be too many.

In those days portraits were usually only done for the wealthy , ranked military officers , government leaders or folk with high status in society.

On July 14 he found 6 new galaxies in 40 mins and on Sept 2, 6 galaxies in 2.5 hours.
On Nov 5 he found 7 galaxies in 1.5 hours.
That is impressive.

The red D on this 1844 map shows the approximate location of Dunlop's telescope in 1826. It was in the block surrounded by Marsden St (L), George St and Church St (R), Parramatta. Dunlop lived nearby with the Elder family. Notice there is no house on Hunter St to the west of St Johns church. Scots church was built after 1840.

It is 198 years today since James Dunlop started making his catalogues of 629 southern clusters and nebulae and 253 double stars from the rear of 91 Marsden St Parramatta with a 9" aperture speculum reflector.
He started on 27 April 1826 from the back of this property.
