Advice on Jupiter

Tried out my ZWO ASO 120 would like to know if this is focus or atmospheric problem. was a bit breezy last night im happy to get what i got but should be a lot better with a 10" Ref;ector want to get it right before using the RGB

Hi Scott,
It could be a bit of both but most likely the conditions. You did say that it was a bit breezy. There's a good chance that some turbulence (the wobbled edges) is at play and maybe even some very light cloud high up that couldn't be seen with the naked eye. Together these would really make it difficult to get or hold good focus. Unfortunately it doesn't take much to affect seeing especially in the bigger scopes like your reflector and if you're using it with high magnification any flaws in seeing will just be amplified.

Scott, if the seeing is bad you will not get good focus, so yes it would be both. Here's a pic I took last week with a 180mm mack cass @ 2800mm fl with a ZWO 120 mc. ( I've tried again a few times since but with the same results as yours) The 10" newt should get better resolution, so keep trying a good night will come sooner or later.

Hi Scott

I can't help you unfortunately, but, seeing your shot makes me much happier about the result I obtained with the webcam and 8" SCT.

I also have what looks like bulging pale bands, and that is really bugging me.

yeah i wish i had that saturn was horribly distorting that night aswell then the cloud rolled in

how much time are you doing rgb?

500 frames at 1280 x 960 on that clip stacked with registax (maybe more is better?), but I did also have a go at 640 x 480, to increase the image size and capture at a faster frame rate which worked out ok as well.
