ebay 10" Dobsonian

Hi Guys,
New to the forum and Astronomy. Looking at possibly purchasing a Dobsonian as our first telescope to get into Astronomy.
What do you think?
Looking at the one on ebay from Qld, 10" Dobsonian $450.
Is this a good price?
On a budget, but of course trying to get value for money and hopefully the right type of telescope to start out with.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ian

Ian!

That scope is a very good deal if in good nick. The whole package is very nice, with a good comprehensive set of eyepieces, and nice useful extras like crayford and fan. The optics on GSO Dobs is generally very good and the 10" is a great size. Laser collimator and EP case are a nice touch too. Go for it!

to IIS Ian,
A 10 inch dob for $450 may be good value, but if you have no way of checking it's condition then you are probably better off dealing with someone like Bintel or Andrews communications. Bintel, for example offer a 10 inch premium dob (includes cooling fan and crayford focusser) for $679 new, bundled with 3 EP's and a moon filter, IMO a safer proposition than a second hand ebay item and within driving distance from your location (no risky freight).

G,day Ian and welcome

A 10"(200mm) Dob is an ideal telescope for astronomy newbie or experienced. I have no experience in buying stuff from ebay but buyer beware. $450 is a good price if the 'scope is in good condition and with a few eyepieces included in the deal.

Cheers, Micko

I noticed that it is a GS Deluxe Crayford model. Excellent scope.

But the seller also says pick up only.

If you had that posted down from QLD it would cost a lot!!!!!

Welcome Ian!

You're doing the right thing, finding out as much as you can before rushing into a purchase decision.. take your time, maybe attend some viewing nights in your local area?

A few forum members belong to the WAAC down at wollongong (RAJAH235 will steer you in the right direction), and they have 10" dobs similar to what you're looking at.

It might be a good idea to actually have a look through them, see what you're in for!

Good luck and keep on posting! It's the quickest way to learn!
