What's your budget ?
If you can stretch it, I'd be leaning towards a 60D.
At D-D Photographics they list the 550D at $960 while the 60D is $1179.

Thanks Andrew. Budget is up to $1500. I want to use it for both Astro and normal photography, especially long exposure for lightning and such.
Does that change the selection any?
Cheers,
Duncan

I'd be going with the 60D.

It's similar to it's bigger sibling, the 7D, which is a great camera IMO.
It has a swivel screen so it's handy for astro for those awkward angles and it also has the new electronic "spirit level" built it, which is also handy and fun to use for terrestrial.

Quality wise, I think you'll find the 60D a better choice all-round.

Duncan, I recently bought a 7D grey import from DWI, just over $1400 delivered to OZ.

I placed my order on a Tuesday, the camera arrived in Tassie on the Friday that same week (3 days).

Luckily I didn't get slugged the GST.

DWI have a local service agent in Australia so that in the event of warranty issues you don't need to ship OS.

DWI currently have the 7D listed at $1332 body only.

The 7D is so much more camera than the 60D.

It's a beautiful camera to use hah Phil?
Love the feel and the controls as so well placed, it's my fav.
Just below the 5DII's IQ but I love using it.

Congrats on your new purchase Phil, (lucky it's black ).

I personally haven't seen any 60D's modded yet, I have heard people doing the 550D though.
The flip screen on the 60D would be beneficial for those awkward angles.

Guys,

I'm new to the DSLR cameras as well.

I am after one for my wife for Christmas, she is after ease of use and for mainly family photos.
No astro use.

I seen the Nikon 3100 with a dual lense kit on sale at the local retailer for $1080.

Are these a good every day use DSLR for a newbie to get into?

It comes with local warranty as it through a local retailer.

Are the online companies that sell grey ones, can you get them serviced here in Brisbane should something go wrong or are they reliable enough to get say the 60D for a grey price?

My budjet is $1400 max.

Cheers for feed back.

Matt.

Hi All,
Well ended up buying the 550D for $1590.00. What i got, Camera with twin lens kit,18-55mm & 55-250mm IS lenses (image stabilised),UV & Circular polarising filters (didn't have ND filter in stock) Tripod, and carry bag.
Shyed away from cheaper price for 60d as grey imported.
Did a 2minute test dark frame ISO800 and could only find one hot pixel right on edge of frame.Note only a quick look and may have missed a line as full digital zoom was used to look.
A few happy snaps and very impressed and very happy. No time to look for adaptors for scope but wet season is here anyway.
Bought mine from Joyce Mayne and did shop around.

PS, I have no affilliation with the above mentioned company but they were extremely helpful and courteous.

Cheers,
Duncan
