Which is a good vacuum cleaner?
My 25 year-old Vax vacuum cleaner is had it. The replacement is for a small house, which has carpets.
Some say Dyson, another recommends Miele. Anybody have any recommendations for this boring chore? (After all, it is not nearly as exciting as buying a new scope or EP.)

We have a barrel Dyson, couldn't be happier Bob.
Lightweight, easy to manoevre, does a good job including picking up dog hair.
My 2 cents

Dyson. No questions. Bought one 15 years ago and replaced just recently. We’ve got cats and it cleans really well.

Our last vacuum purchase was a Dyson stick.
At the insistence of our son (an asthma sufferer).Dubious then, but now ...
Could not be happier.
Amazing how much it collects, even in a clean room, tiles and carpet.
I didn't think there would be much difference in vacuum cleaners,
but this stick vacuum cleaner is by far the best most efficient cleaner we have ever owned.
And its only a V6.
Current model is V11 I believe.
Truly, we are now among the converted believers.

We had a Dyson DC35, which was entry level at the time. It was gutless compared to what we were used to, and the battery couldn't get us through the house on a wooden floor.
As said, DC35 was bottom of the pile. I'm sure the V6, 8, 11, etc deliver as reported by their happy owners. I guess I'm saying, don't buy the entry level just because it's Dyson.
We then bought a Henry commercial vac, which is very powerful, but unexplainably quiet.
https://www.godfreys.com.au/henry (we didn't buy from Godfrey's - link only for convenience).
I guess after a certain price point, you can't go too wrong. For us, that price was $400.

Have a Miele cat and dog, had it for donkeys and still going strong.
The down side is you have to buy bags where as the Dyson ones you don’t!

+1 for a dyson. Had a vax many years ago which was great but when it finally died we bought a dyson. Very happy with it.

The best one is one with 3rd hospital grade filter.
Do some research before buying.

We have a Wertheim with extremely strong suction , HEPA filter and great pickup especially when used with the powered brush head.

The problem with the good ones is that they all really suck.
Someone had to!
But seriously, I've had a Dyson DC08 since 2004 and it's been great.

We have two Dysons:
A DC15 (upright, mains powered), that I've hated from the day we got it. It is large, clunky, over engineered and underpowered. It doesn't have the suction of other mains powered vacs, including bag models like the Nilfisk King we had before. Unfortunately, after 12 years it is still going (with a couple of DIY repairs and complete disassemblies). That would be considered a plus, but it keeps me from getting the Miele I want
Then we have a V6 Animal. That thing is the biggest waste of money ever. The battery life is pathetic and so is the battery lifespan. Our second battery is just on its way out. The biggest issue is that it has barely any suction at all. It can't pick up dry cat food (my cat is a pig), it just pushes it around. It's useless for cleaning dust out of old computers and electronics. They are also not reliable either. Ours is frankensteined together with parts from our friends' (who convinced us to buy the V6 in the first place, and whose vac's motor burned out shortly after they replaced the battery). If I ever get suckered into a battery vac again it will not be a Dyson but an LG or something like that.
Sorry to go contrary to the mainstream opinion, but that's my experience.

So I suppose, what you're saying, is that Dysons suck, Steffan?

Exactly my experience with the DC35. You could say I was sucked in by the hype. I just put it down to being entry level model. But alas your V6 was no better.
The Henry I mentioned above is amazing for only a 600w motor.

We have a Dyson V7 which the head seized up last year. That prompted me to buy the Dyson V11. Awesome piece of kit. Better than V7 by a country mile and I thought the V7 was ok. You had to be efficient but it could do a three bedroom house, bathroom, laundry and kitchen. The V11 is well near perfect. High power, lots of battery and intelligent. Worth the money. Even our casual cleaner (she comes in once a month to top up our cleaning) likes it.
We also have a Dyson upright but that gets used at my observatory these days. Had it for years and it has been a good vac.

Miele. Small, powerful, a retracting cord that actually works. Got 2. One an upper model for the house and another cheaper version of the same but works well from Godfreys. It didn't cost much.
Greg.
