Question Best example of galaxy merger to photograph?

Hi all,

I'd like to do a nice colour image of a galaxy merger as a project for an upcoming exhibition at my workplace. Deadline is March so must be above the horizon between now and then!

Can anyone suggest the best example of a galaxy merger south of 0 degrees declination?

Thanks!

Pity you have set a dead line I was going to suggest M31 and the Milky Way.

I would have said it doesn't get more iconic than ngc 5128... it is representative of a couple of stages of galaxy merger and is the closest example of an active (galaxy) radio source to boot.

I'm after something that is more obviously an interaction of two galaxies.

I wouldn't mind subjects as big as 5128 though

There is also NGC 4038/4039 Antennae galaxy in Corvus.
It is 18° South and is a classic merging galaxy pair, mag about 9.5 or so.

Very nice pair and great size - January-Feb they'd be getting high enough.
