It's been useful to reconnect my slightly fractured family ties but you'll notice I post no 'selfies', no images of family or friends. Useful for staying in contact with interest groups like IIS of course.

Still gets rubbish promo ads chucked at it cos FB thinks it knows my preferences. Use it as you need, ignore the rest of the cr@p.

I installed the Facebook Purity plugin as mentioned earlier. Solved all the gripes I had with FB, except for not filtering selfies and food shots

FBpurity combined with Adblock Plus eliminates the ads totally.
FBP allows you to customize and filter what you see.
