Its very sad news.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends and also the bowler, Sean Abbott.

Yes,

In the history of cricket this has been a quite rare event, thank luck and goodness, even though helmets were only worn regularly from 1978 (Dennis Amiss). We will greatly miss Phil Hughes, who was set to step in for Michael Clarke just now.

I feel especially bad for the bowler too, who was playing cricket as fast bowlers have been meant to do since Fred Spofforth. I do hope he too is receiving support and comfort, since he did nothing wrong whatsoever.

This tragedy will reverberate far I think, with calls to eliminate or limit the rising ball. My guess though is that will not happen, as it is part of the spectacle.

No cheer today

Holy crap, that is really bad news. In addition to his family, one has to feel for the bowler, he will never be the same.
It will be very interesting to see what the Cricket authorities do regarding short pitched deliveries.

A very tragic and sad reminder that life is far too short and unpredictable and that we should live each day to the fullest. RIP Phil Hughes and condolences to his family, friends, and poor Sean Abbott - I cannot imagine how he must be feeling right now. I hope they all have the appropriate support in place to help them through such an awful time.

Very sad day for the Hughes family and Australian cricket. Poor bugger that bowled the ball must be devastated

When it's appropriate to analyse the incident, it's going to be interesting to see what follows... compulsory helmets? Bouncers banned or no balled?

Even though it was an awful & tragic freak accident, it did happen - not to decry Phil Hughes who was a professional and highly takented cricketer, but what if it was someone's kid in a local grade comp? I'm not advocating drastic measures or a nanny attitude, but sport is meant to be fun not lethal.

I suspect a board if inquiry may rule for redesigned mandatory helmets before this is all over.

RIP Phil Hughes, a life well played but far too short

It's strange to think of the twists of fate like this.

As a youngster I was hit in the head with full toss playing cricket (before we had helmets), caught me on the temple, needless to say I hit the ground with thump. I had a lump half the size of the ball.

It was no 140km/h rocket (maybe 80km/h), but still I was obviously lucky.

Yes, Trevor, I don't think many people would appreciate that that ball is hard and travelling at that speed, it hurts.

It is a tragedy, particular when you consider, that particularly injury is rare and has only ever been recorded a 100 times, according to a news report.

From what I can gather, one of his major arteries to the brain was severed causing a massive brain bleed. At least that is what one medico stated on the news tonight. Sounds like he really did not stand a chance. Really a freakish way to go. He will most definitely be missed by the cricket fraternity. A very talented cricketer indeed.
