Nullarbor Aurora

After spending a few cloudy nights on the Nullarbor plains the sky cleared on the last night and I pointed my Canon compact towards Crux as it was partially dipping below the horizon. After seeing the red glow near the pointers, I took another shot but the red glow was already fainter and it never returned over the next hour or so. The latitude was S31 degrees, on the 15th of November, at the end of astronomical twilight.

Thanks for the comments. This red glow was a complete surprise to me, as the location was almost as far north as Coffs Harbour on the east coast.

Leon,
Yes I love the Outback, but it is so damn far away from Melbourne.

Great work Stefan, and yes the Outback is magic. Can't wait to go inland again myself.

Great photo Stefan.

I haven't been out on the Nullarbor since the early 80's but I still remember that nightly carpet of stars accross the sky.

Cheers
