Strange Lights in the NT

It has the makings of a page 3 story in the NT news !
I am still puzzled by reports of a fast moving bright (blue) object the moved across Nhulunbuy for Aprox 3 to 5 seconds at a low? altitude. Time: Tuesday night at Aprox 7pm. It does not correlate with any known de-orbits, the ISS, Iridum Flares or a major meteor shower. My Conclusion: an uncataloged piece of Space Junk (indicated by blue or white colour) or less likely a meteorite IMHO.

Hi Ian,

Hope you have been keeping well.

I guess we may never know. But as many of us have witnessed first hand,
a meteorite with a copper content does burn with a bright blue/green glow.

Hope the weather is warmer there than here in Sydney!

Best Regards

Gary

No one would have believed in the first years of the 21st century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own...... wweeeeeeooooo

Hey Jennifer, you must have the War of The Worlds CD as well, nearly identical first line of the musical.

Hi Ian,

Last week I joined with Tony and Lach and we took the 3RF Dobs up to Lightning
Ridge for a public outreach event. Ray Norris was also there and gave his presentation
on aboriginal astronomy. I know Tony & Lach really enjoyed the visit to Nhulunbuy.
Hope one day to get to visit you up there.

Speaking of mysterious lights ...

On the drive up, Tony was giving me his account of having once seen the fabled Mim Mim
lights. He was driving 100km/h and after half an hour the lights passed him, driving
100km/h down the road in the other direction. With the right conditions for refraction,
it is amazing how the lights of a pair of car headlights can be seen over such
a distance.

Take care and be sure to put up a "Beware of the crocodiles" sign for any prospective intergalactic visitors.

That's a bit like driving the longest straight road in Australia, 149 kilometers long.

One can see the lights of a car in the distance and it takes about half an hour to pass you going the other way, quite a spectacle.

A close encounter in the Top End - a personal anecdote

Hi Leon,

It's amazing, isn't it? What particular stretch do you have in mind?

I've witnessed this phenomena myself at night in a section of that long straight stretch
between Nyngan and Bourke. You see the other headlights for an eternity, then suddenly
what turns out to be truck goes zooming past the other way.

We also had a close encounter in the Top End once and I will take the time
to relate the tale here.

One night we were driving along the Victoria Hwy between Timber Creek
and Katherine in the NT. There were joint military exercises going on
in the area and we had seen quite a few tanks and other armoured vehicles along the
road and in the bush during the day. As we had witnessed armoured vehicles
unexpectedly come crashing out of the bush and onto the road in front of us,
our vigilance was heightened.

So here we are driving along at night literally in the middle of nowhere
when I grew conscious of something rapidly approaching on my right and I could
hear an enormous roar. In an instant I assumed a large tank was careering out
of the bush towards us on a collision course and in that split second I braced
myself for what my senses were telling me must be an inevitable impact. There
was an enormous deafening roar and our 4WD shook and we both simultaneously
shouted out in anticipation of us being hit side on. However, what appeared only
tens of meters above us and to the left were the glow from the twin exhausts of an
F18 Hornet that had just buzzed us. I assume it was operating out of Tindal Air
Force Base near Katherine and the pilot would have seen our lone pair of
headlights traveling that lonely dark stretch of road in the Top End as a target of
opportunity to practice a simulated strafing run on.

The Army has an illumination round for the 84mm Carl Gustav anti-armour weapon. This shoulder-fired weapon can send a "lume" round high in the sky to illuminate the battlefield for a few minutes.

There are lots of exercises up there. Perhaps an explanation?

Baz.

Actually it's the first line from the book (except it says 'the last years of the 19th century')

Though I do, of course, have the Jeff Wayne version -----oooooo-llllaaaa!

Saw min min lights in the Bermuda triangle. I was in a boat 40 miles off the coast of Bermuda - deep sea fishing. (I used to live in Bermuda)
The balls of light came out of the water and floated about 4 or 5 feet above the water then drifted off into the air- creepy as hell.

The straightest piece of road in Australia is on the Nullarbor 146.6kms or in the old days 90 mile straight.
Cheers

With the history of the Bermuda Triangle, that would freek you out for sure. Some kind of ball lightning effect perhaps ? Coming out of the water though ....Hmmmm

I am sure they are already living among us .... I meet them often,
Seriously, you can't be from this planet !
anyhow
The Mystery deepens, I had another call today, the same object seen on our sister town, 20km away.
2 nights running, one east to west, the other west to east. A glow, bright blue, as big as your thumb at arms length.

Something about the UFO phenomenon has always puzzled me greatly:
Why would extraterrestrials mount bright/coloured/blinking lights on their spaceships? I mean, the Space Shuttle is(was) not exactly covered in lights... So what would the purpose be?

This aspect never seems to be addressed by those who believe that UFO's are alien crafts.

Good point Rolf ..... but Douglas Adams had it all worked out.
"Crop Circles & strange lights in the sky are bored rich kids, dropping in to freak out earthlings"

Update: Still seeking a rational Answer to this one (and i am sure there is)
So I have set up a blog post on the unfolding mystery:
