Presently in a faint galaxy field in Aquarius. This comet is predicted to make Mag 5 in a few months. I think it has some catching up to do! Presently around mag 12ish.
Early morning Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) June 18 1620UT. Getting brighter, presently about magnitude 10ish. Image is cropped. Funny little short stubby tail. This comet has a very close conjunction with galaxy NGC7793 in a few days time.
Hey Kevin, i read about this comet on Universe today, looks like it will be an interesting one. it would be good to pull together a time lapse and watch it brighten over the weeks.
great image Kev! how sure are you of your Mag estimates? July 12 Mag 9 and 3 weeks later Mag 7, well that would mean we might get quite a show from this one!
Hi Krishan, I'm referencing the COBS database for magnitude estimates. They all seem to agree on mag 7-ish.
The comet is still inbound for a perihelion on November 15. However the comet will recede from Earth after August 15 due to our orbit and start heading closer on November 2. Close approach to Earth is January 17 2016.
Looking good Kevin. Found it quite easily last night with the 120mm achro. I should be able to get the 10" on it for an hour or so between the trees tonight. No dew problems these last few nights, but the seeing has been a bit hazy?
Nice catch out the kitchen window. I was out last night for visual catch up. As you say it is an easy hop from the pointers and an easy spot it in 7x50 bins. The sight through my 140mm refractor at 89x was magnificent against the rich star field. I could see a bright coma with some condensation at the centre and a hint of a short broad tail in averted vision. Cannot view it out the window though!
Cheers
Steve
