Windows 7 USB to Serial RS232 Adaptor

Hi Everyone,
If anyone is having trouble finding a USB to Serial Adaptor that works with Windows 7 - 32 or 64 Bit versions - and all previous versions of Windows as well as Mac and Linux, you can get them through Harvey Norman, you may need to get the staff to order in Item IOH211 or order directly from the following companies.
Its is made be ATEN (www.aten.com - as UC232A) but marketed/distributed by either IOGear - as GUC232A - or Conexus - as IOH211.
The Targus Brand adaptor - PA088 - doesn't (yet?) have drivers for Windows 7 but works ok with Windows XP (Tested) and Vista(Untested).
The Belkin Brand adaptors only currently work with Vista or earlier.
I have both the ATEN model for my Windows 7 Laptop and the Targus model for my Windows XP Laptop so can confirm that they do work.
I have used both with Stellarium to directly control my Skywatcher HEQ5Pro mount without the need for ASCOM drivers/software.
Hope this is helpful
Kind Regards,
Darren

The Targus PA088 definitely works with windows 7. I have it connected from the Meade LX200 into Sky 6 / X no issues. I think I just used the Vista driver from memory. I have it saved and will check later.

Just what you need to find is the file PA088_v3 this works with Windows 7.

I got a couple of keyspans off ebay last month. Was about $80 for 2 delivered from the US.

The difference is you can configure the keyspan driver to do what you want with the config tool that comes with it. The other adapters don't have this feature and we know the keyspan is compatible with everything.

+1 for the Aten / EQ6Pro / ASOM combo (thx Brendan). She's a beauty. Most computer shops carry them too

I'm posting this here for anyone else who has this problem. When I moved my robofocus to a new laptop running 64 bit Windows 7 it stopped working. The drivers look like it installed ok, but the robofocus reports errors. I tried all the drivers I could find and none fixed it.
Then I found this driver on the Jaycar website:

and it works thank goodness.

And if you want / might want more than 2 Keyspans, don't overlook the 4 port USA-49WG at $US119 from Amazon + postage. Got mine in a week.

Cheers, Marcus

Tried both Belkin and Keyspan with my Toshiba laptop and Maxdome control of my Sirius observatory. neither worker with considerable effort under XP, however an Aten serial2USB worked first time.

Strange. I've used Belkins (WinXP and Win7 64 bit (using Magic Control Technologies driver)) on 3 different Toshiba lappies over the years to control my Sirius/Maxdome observatory without difficulty. Lots of people say the Belkins are flakey though. The only apparent issue with the Belkin for me was that its protocols/handshaking weren't good enough to do a firmware update on Maxdome.

I've now changed to Keyspan and the unit worked first time out of the box (Win7 64 bit driver) for Maxdome and Robofocus.

Cheers, Marcus

The good old Belkin F5U409 also works fine under windows 7 64 bit.
But not with Belkin drivers.

Belkin say no support but some ennterprising young chap sorted the issue out for us.

see this blog here http://www.clearchain.com/blog/posts...bit-mac-osx-10 for the right driver to download. I used this in fact today to install a new robofocus based Camera rotator on my windows 7 64 bit laptop. works great
