Oysters are certainly capable of transmitting Typhoid fever (via certain salmonella bacteria). It was traced as the cause of a famous Typhoid outbreak in the UK in the 1900s, due to effluent tainted seawater near the oyster beds. It killed several people and hospitalised many more following a large city banquet. Some stories suggest that it also "killed" the industry for many decades.
I'm sure things are better now with greater attention to food standards and hygiene, BUT the possibility is always there.
