There was a question only last week...what lies at the centre of our galaxy?

Answers were, the Earth, the Moon, a black hole and a supernova.

First contestant passed, second answered...the Moon!!!

A lot of people would have got it wrong, especially if one is not interested, or knows anything about Astronomy.

Just saying !!

Totally taken aback by such basic lack of knowledge, I shouted that question out to a few buddies.

NONE of them knew the right answer. I was shocked.

And incidentally Justin, Eddie (McGuire) mentioned the name of our galaxy as being the Milky Way, and the 4th selection wasn't 'a supernova', it was 'nougat' (being in the centre of a bar of 'galaxy' chocolate bar I suppose!).

But yeah, everyone I asked was struggling between the Earth and the Moon and essentially had no idea.

I very quickly decided not to ask anyone else because they looked at me like I was some sort of smartass or something - knowing (a little) about this space stuff!

Duh..

It doesn't REALLY surprise me that many people have no idea which planets are visible to the naked eye - it's not a fact that comes up often in daily conversation if you have no interest in astronomy.

What DOES surprise me is that some people are apparently unaware that the Moon is visible in daylight hours:

I saw the moon in a blue sky. Why? How can this happen? I thought the moon was visible only at night!

You would have to be almost wilfully stupid to reach adulthood and never have noticed the Moon in the daylight sky!

Ahh, thanks Paul

Was struggling to remember the fourth answer and supernova was all that came to mind.
Nougat is far more obvious an answer, surprised it wasn't chosen.

Well, a golfer would be a complimentary term for what I do every Saturday - I do play - a member at Gailes (Wacol). I do have quite the collection of LM pants & shorts.
