Tak MEF unit service tips!

Hi all,

Looking at servicing my Fsq 85edx MEF unit over Christmas period.
Definetly not as tight a unit as my TSA.
It has been used as a imaging scope by 2 previous owners so the imaging train load and use has taken its toll I think.
I have tightened the 2 tension screws on top of the focuser to remove any play in the focus tube. - All good.
So any advice on what I should be careful of when pulling the unit apart and what else I can adjust would be much appreciated.

Cheers
(Also what type of grease to use)

Darren, did you remember to back off the tension of the focuser pinion before tensioning the draw tube glide on top.
I found it is best to actually remove the focuser pinion assembly completely, then make the adjustment to the top set screws that tension the draw tube glide strip. Then when refitting the pinion assembly retract the push screws until they are level with the housing. From there adjust them exactly the same amount (I usually do each one a quarter turn until the pinion mesh is close and then an eighth of a turn to fine tune until there is no back lash.

Tensioning too much may actually bend the pinion shaft leading to uneven pinion rotation.

Thanks Matt,

I did back off the focuser pinion before adjusting the tensioning screws on the focuser, but should have taken the visual back and 2" diagonal off before adjusting. (Excess weight)
So I'll retry with small increments without any extra weight! and add a small amount of grease to the visable linear rack and see how this goes.

Removed the focuser pinion altogether as you suggested and lo and behold another set of tension screws = 4 total

I'll trade you my TSA-102S for the FSQ-85. Then you can make a bino-102

That's ok Lewis I'm more than content with I've got now!

Pulled the MEF unit apart today and no sign of grease anywhere on the bearings.
So re-greased and re assembled, much better now but still not perfect.
See how it goes with a bit of use.

Cheers
