I like SmugMug ( www.smugmug.com) for photos. I haven't put any astro images up there yet, but I don't see why that wouldn't work well...
Cheers,
Rick.

Depends on whether you wish to pay.
Forget Flickr. White backgrounds for images where showing shadow detail is paramount, is fail.
Pbase is affordable. $23 a year for 800 MB.

SkyDrive (Windows live) does the job.

Windows Live seems to do a good job, although I use Jalbum because it has free access for 2G of photo but because I have a website I can use their software at no cost to upload as much as I want.
The main benefit is the Windows software to manage photo's and then just upload them when i am ready, saves a lot of time uploading bit by bit and waiting for web page update to insert comments.
For a better system I am considering Zoomify for more detail descriptions, but it will take more work.

I am using Windows Skydrive and I can upload full size images or smaller ones the only restriction I can find is files must be under 50MB

I've just finished uploaded my recent pics to Flickr.
It's quite restrictive in image size, but at least they're higher res than previously.
I'm thinking Pbase later down the track when I'm more financial.
Thanks guys.

I don't use it, but I heard some complaints about security/intellectual property rights complaints about flickr lately, so maybe just check the account settings to make sure they don't automatically have use of your high res images or something nasty like that

I've been fretting on that you know Jase. Been reading through the clauses etc. And unless you limit who can see your pics, which defeats the whole purpose, anyone can download them.
what to do, delete the account?

Hard to say There's always going to be some risk when displaying on the net, especially when you want to show your incredible work in all it's glory at high res. And noone wants to big a big ugly watermark on it, either
Some sites offer the "right click disable" feature which makes it so they can't be saved by right clicking (it will save as a bogus .gif instead), but of course that doesn't stop people from print screening.
I'm sure there will be a suitible compromise somewhere though, I'm just not sure in regards to showing high res stuff. Hey flickr might even have the right click option, so if you could enable that then make sure that they don't have "rights" to your images on their site, then you're in business!
(I use redbubble.com for my photography, but I don't think the display res will be high enough for you)

Just remove the images before deleting the account.
I have right click protection though i have disabled it for a short time for my Planetary Science teacher to use some of the images.

You're really doing yourself a disservice by placing your images on /any/ site which has a white background.
It is the most offputting thing, ever.
Your eyes can't see jack because they're being blasted by white.

Right-click protection only stops basic users. For anyone who knows what they're doing, they'll still be able to download the hi-res.
I upload 1200px wide images without watermarks etc. You can still print them 6x4 etc but if someone does that, there's not much I can do about it.
I just keep my hi-res images locally, or on my FTP site which is private.

I just noticed that Jalbum has watermarking feature, I have yet to try it out, The only problem would be spoiling the view of the image in the first place.

I'm watermarking all the images atm. And will reload them soon.
H, In Flickr, if you left click on the image you go to a darkened display. It's not too bad.
I'm using this little app to do the water marking.

After Mikes pics were stolen, and entered into a competition, I'm not going to risk the same with mine. I've put my heart and soul into them, they're my babies.

Wow, that must've been infuriating Did you just happen to stumble across them Mike or did they have metadata or something funky like that?

Nothing you put online can be protected. Trying to disable right click, save as, page caching is easily circumvented. If you are viewing something in your web browser it is already saved on your hard drive. The internet browser saves the web pages including text and pictures on your HD then reads them from your HD. So if the user knows where to look he can easily access the file directly and copy/paste it.
If you want better protection you can embed your pictures in a container. Flash comes to mind. You can have a generic flash file automatic resize to the loaded picture. Only the flash file will be saved in the browser cache. Of course the user can copy/paste that flash file but it wil only be an empty container without the bitmap.
There are another number of measures that can be done by modifying the header information of the original files (digital watermaks - not the visual ones) but then again you can do a copy/paste at pixel level and start with a brand new file so that's pretty much useless again.
