i am Pierre. This forum has been found while googling Mewlon improvements (i.e. baffling shortening). Living in the North East of France, i am an instrument astronomer amateur user since 7 years. My principal equipment is Tak Mewlon 180 fitted in an em200Temma2 for visual use and imaging (bw webcam and ccd).
going the longest distances causes the shortest connections :-)). Did you read my introduction?. Ive made a documentation about the great Observatory in Strasbourg. I recently had the chance to do that, and im really impressed about the facility. The documentation is ready to download but requires a softdecoder ;-) but there are no costs. Its training for me and and by the way a good contribution to astronomy. The Mewlon is surely a very good instrument!. I personally use a 6" Maksutov/Cassegrain from BOSMA with good quality. But in addition there are other scopes i will use too in the near future.
Varyonyx: gee, you have worked about this observatory....Did you see and use the 487mm f/14 Refractor?
The Mewlon is quite a good reflector indeed. Some modifications are needed if you wish to perform on deep-sky imaging.

Hi Pierre, the big Refractor is an impressive one. .Looks like a railway canon during the 2nd world war. Unfortunately i cant use it because my visit was during daylight . I think it is worth a look at the video .
In which city do you live?
Varyonyx: you are nearly right. The grey paint sprayed on the tube was to hide copper alloy parts included in the construction during WWII; otherwise they would have been removed...

Haguenau, i know it. No wonder if you are familiar with the OBS Strasbourg. . The great Repsold Refractor is the second of the big telescopes i ever saw. The first was the 3.5m Reflector in the Assembly Hall at CARL Zeiss West/Germany more than 2 decades before. Now the telescope is located for more than 20years on the hill of Calar Alto in Spain, part of the ESO.
