A file with the CR2 file extension is a Canon Raw Version 2 Image file.
From what i know about Canons that is a RAW file that can be stacked in DSS without conversion before hand. I have run thousands of Canon RAW files through DSS without dramas.
Try a few file, without converting them in Photoshop, and see how you go. I doubt the computer is the problem.
Photoshop is fine for editing the final stacked file.
