Canon 1000D verses ?

Hi All,

I've seen a Canon 1000D with 18-55 & 55-300mm lenses for around $900.
Was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this camera verses any other in the same price bracket. To be used for terrestrial and Astro work.
All feedback appreciated.
Cheers,
Duncan

Hi Duncan,

I bought my son a 1000D with the twin lens kit you mention for about $1K last year and while the remote control via laptop is good and the lenses are quite OK, it doesnt seem to have much sensitivity to low light on long exposures, enough, but I dont think its on par with the CCD DSLR's. I am pretty sure it has a CMOS sensor and therefore suffers a bit, even at high ISO speeds.

I really havent used it too much for LE work but as a DSLR its quite good for the money. You may want to try a Pentax K series or any other with a CCD chip rather than a CMOS one. Someone will probably point out how wrong I might be here, but I am just explaining my experiences with it.

I hope this helps (or detracts, as the case may be)

Cheers

Chris

i got into AP with my Canon 1000D, and while its true to say that for terrestrial photography its not as good as its more upmarket siblings, for AP work its great, the live view is a great boost, and it takes great images, another plus point of it thats often overlooked, is the weight.

It weighs about as much as a small hamster called Gerald. and is half the weight of its moer obese cousins

The only reason I'd go for a newer generation camera like the 500D is that they appear to have less dark frame noise.

Thanks Chris and Duncan for your replies.
Yes the 500D is a lot better for dark frames for sure.
Maybe i should just bite the bullet and save some more!!!

Duncan

Thanks for the link H. I think i'll save a few hundred more and get the twin lens kit. Will come in very handy on my fishing trips.
Plus of course i'll have to buy the adaptors to suit the skywatcher as well.
Cheers,
Duncan

1000d is great for an entry level astro camera. Liveview makes focusing a breeze.

Hi Duncan,

I've bought several items from DWI & found them to be prompt & reliable. They are very competative & their prices change with the AU$.

Good luck with your purchase.

Cheers,

Kim

500D - POOR dark frame performance (link to samples)

Hi guys,

I'm quite interested in this 500D Dark Frame discussion, as my personal experience with my own 500D - is VERY POOR dark frame performance. Several reviews have quoted it as being better than previous generations including this one - http://ghonis2.ho8.com/rebelmod500d/...0dcompare.html

However I took a series of tests comparing dark frames at different ISO & exposure length combinations, and as you can see there's plenty of colour noise. Basically anything at 2 minutes or more @ 1600 ISO (or the equivalent exposure times at 800 & 400 ISO), are very bad. Follow the lines diagonaly below to see the equivalent exposures at the 3 x different ISO settings.

Time/ISO 1600 800 400
30 sec____x
1 min_____x___x
2 min_____x___x___x
4 min_____x___x___x
8 min_________x___x
16 min____________x

Test results are here - http://dhein.no-ip.org/public/DSS/50...20ISO%20Tests/

My quesiton is - is it a batch variation with the sensors .. e.g. I have a bad camera, or is this typical.

It would be great if someone else could post some comparitive 500D examples.

Cheers
David

Hi David...those pic you posted are of around 12-21Mb's each.

Can you convert them to smaller jpgs? I know they loose some quality but ATM I think most people won't want download multiple large data files.

I'm interested in your results.

Maybe you took your pics with the camera at a higher temperature? Maybe try at night when the camera is cooler?

I had a quick look & your sensor does appear noisy even at ISO400.

David,

I'm very interested to follow this up too, but I had trouble downloading any of the files. When I get some time I'll run some tests on my 500D to compare.

Are all those images at ISO 1600? I ask this becuase all the folder names have 1600 in them.
Also I can't find the 8min and 16min exposures.

How did you make these JPG images - did you shoot in RAW mode or JPG mode? If it was JPG mode, what JPG quality settings did you use?

James
