* Total Lunar Eclipse on Wednesday Night!

Heads Up Australia! Total Lunar Eclipse- Wednesday 8th September.

On the evening of 8th October, look towards the east- there will be a total eclipse of the Moon, the second of two visible from Australia this year. The Moon will slowly move through Earth’s shadow, as the Sun, Earth and Moon fall into line with each other.

In eastern and central states, the eclipse will commence at twilight and will end in dark skies. Western Australia will see the Moon rise partly eclipsed with maximum eclipse occurring shortly after civil twilight, and totality finishing after nautical twilight.

For people in W.A. if you wish to catch the early part of the eclipse you will need a clear, flat horizon. As for the rest of the states, the eclipse will occur reasonably high in the sky providing good viewing from almost anywhere.

Many thanks go to Ian's Musgrave's fabulous Astroblog for this information. For more information on the event and table of times across Australia and New Zealand, click here: http://bit.ly/1urIZia

Ian has also written a great article giving several tips on how to photograph the event using a mobile phone or a point and shoot camera. Click here: http://bit.ly/1pG7HFU

* The Milky Way from the ISS

This amazing shot of the Milky Way galaxy from onboard the ISS was created by IceInSpace member Pluto, by stacking and processing 52 images from a timelapse sequence captured by astronauts on the ISS. Original images courtesy of the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, NASA Johnson Space Center, and were 0.5s exposures @ ISO12800 with a Nikon D3S and 24mm f/1.4 lens. The ISS was over the Nullabor when this shot was taken. Hugh used DSS, PixInsight and Photoshop for processing.
