Knowing which filters to use & optimal signal.

Hi guys,

Two questions really, but here goes..

How to know which deep sky targets have strong signals in which wavelengths, in order to bring the right filters. eg. N2 is prominent in planetary nebulae Ive read, but its not in all targets. Is there a website that details the strong wavelengths in each deep sky target?

Second question is how to know when you have collected the optimal signal per filter? eg. 5 hours of Ha collected, now how long is needed for O3 and S2 (and is S2 even needed) to get the right balance in the final image? Should I be looking at ADU values or something else?
Would like to avoid wasteing time imaging with a particular filter when there's practically no signal on that wavelength, or know when to simply stop when I have enough.
