Thanks again! I’m pleased that those who missed this spectacle can at least get a 2 dimensional view, care of a bit of Photoshop creativity.
Barb & Dave – you almost got an e-mail last week, begging you for your recent M4 data so I could complete the mosaic, but the clouds did eventually clear up here.
Cheers
Dennis

Great Shot Dennis, very surreal. I also really like the closest approach image.

Well done Dennis on your initial moon shot, magnificent. The addition of the star clusters is unfortunately lost on me since they would not be at all visible so close to a near full moon. I too have Photoshop which I use to add text or adjust levels etc. I do wonder if this type of collage resulting in an impossible image does anything to encourage future astronomers or astrophotographers.

I don't think Dennis has ever had any intention of displaying this, or misrepresenting this, as an image that could be captured in a single shot. This one, and the one he did last year, has the full capture and processing details so people know full well it's a composite.
It's a beautiful piece of astronomical artwork.

Hi John
I appreciate your comments and as Mike has explained (thank you Mike), the written details with the mosaic clearly identify this as a Photoshop composite.
I think that most astronomers would easily identify this as a composite and hopefully it would not spoil their enjoyment of astronomy. As long as composites are clearly identified as such, I cannot see any damage to our hobby arising from these efforts.
One spin off that I enjoy from these composites, is getting a newly found sense of scale about objects such as M4, when they are placed in the same frame as our familiar Moon.
I’m afraid that I am also a bit of a technology junkie, using the full array of equipment that I able to afford, in order to provide me with the satisfaction I require from the hobby. I would never have attempted this using my 35mm film camera and the wet processing of a traditional dark room! Notwithstanding that I didn’t have the necessary equipment and skills in those days gone by!
Cheers

Hi Dennis, long time no speak! I still swing by occasionally to see what's being produced. You see a lot on technically wonderful and stunningly detailed images on this site, but I've got to hand it to you and yours - your images, and this is a prime example, bring art and science together in a seamless and awe-inspiring union that few others can match!
Take a bow!!!
cheers,
Rob

Hey Robert
Nice to hear from you once more and thank you for the nice words of encouragement.
You do know, don’t you, that my addiction is all your fault. The moment I set eyes your Mewlon 180 I was hooked. It’s all been downhill from thereon; I just can’t get enough of the gorgeous views through this amazing optical tube.
Hope that you and yours are all well and that we’ll see some more cracking hi-res images from you soon.
Cheers
Dennis

Thank you once more for your nice feedback - it certainly was a real pleasure being able to record this scene via the composite.

This is a breathtakingly brilliant shot and worthy of at least an APOD!! It's artistic yet accurate - and, IMHO, that's what most amateur astrophotography is all about. Fantastic colour on the moon too, plus you've imparted a 3D feel to it as well.
You've created a magical scene there Dennis. Well done!!!
Cheers, Marcus
