Post Encyclopaedia Britannica no longer to be printed

End of an era so to speak, but still available online.
Interesting to know how many here grew up with the Britannica lining their family bookshelves.

I did not only grow up with them, my Fater was the State Manager of the company. They did not make me smart, but I spent lots of fun times at the royal show each year. Dad had six stands that we all helped to set up. As a result I got to know lots of people at the show. My Sister and I got lots of rides and free stuff. When I grew up ( big boy) I became a salesman selling them in the home. When computers started to come out I told my father that soon it will be all on the computer. He laughed at me and said they are the most comprehensive books in the world, they will never fit is on a disk. I now use that against him when I need to win a debate.

Thats part of my story.. Very sad but change is good

Regards
Mardy

I just wish that McGraw Hill would see the light and produce the McGraw Hill Concise Dictionary of Science & Technology and the Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology on DVD. Seems strange that a book on science and technology isn't keeping up with the times.

I asked them last year when they would produce this work on a DVD and they told me it is not being considered. Must be to do with the excessive price they command for the printed version of the dictionary; $450 for the two volume set dictionary and the Encyclopaedia $2,500. I guess they can't charge that much for a DVD, but then, they would probably sell a lot more.

Saw that this morning. Very sad. Dad bought them for us when we were kids. We still have a 1987 edition, along with the magnificent leather-bound fat dictionary, and, the end of year books for 1986 and 1987.

End of an era, for sure.

Sad that an era has ended, but totally understandable.

A big problem with printed hard-copy books is that they go out of date as information is corrected. Many old entries are very wrong now.
You can't Flash Upgrade a printed Book

We recently threw out our kids 'Junior World Encyclopaedia' as much of the information in it was sooooo wrong and out of date.

But I do like the feel of reading a book and looking at the pics on paper.
Computers lack the tactile experience.

I always found our EB a little disappointing as a kid. I liked to dig deeply into a subject and there was rarely enough detail to satisfy me. The Internet is pretty crap on many topics too
