My wife and I are planning a trip to the central west in November and have decide to add Parkes to our itinerary. I would like to take some photos of the dish in early evening or night but of course that is not allowed. Does anyone know of any areas outside the property where good night images can be taken? I have good telephoto lenses so that would help if I could find a good spot.
I have taken night photos from their grounds. After the visitor centre has closed the grounds and toilets were left open all night when I was there. May pay to give them a call in case they have changed it.
Cheers Bob
Also worth a try is the valley as you roll into Parkes on the highway. It is at a distance but could make a good photo with decent camera gear. This one taken in 2010 as I pedaled through the region, the dish is middle on left. Camera was a humble Ixus.
Once you get in the facility it is a photographers delight. Well worthwhile.
I was there mid last year and it was a last minute idea on our way back from Griffith. We got there near sunset and visitor centre was closed but we could still go around and take photos.
