Depends on the device. Win10 is great on a newer pc/ laptop for usual business.

If you have an old laptop or mini pc lying around to convert to astro use , Ubuntu with KStars Ecos works fine where win 10 is just not possible and is surprisingly easy. Even works on macs I am told. Might try that next.

I went to Ubuntu several months ago, it worked for me, "out of the box". Ekos/KStars is great so I won't be returning to Windows.

Try it by booting into Linux from a USB stick first.

What a beat up, MacOS surged to 4.15% - from 3.41% ( a whole .74% ) while the old unsupported OS slumped to around 25.59% - from 26.23% ( a whole .64% ) W10 is around 56.00%.
Just the media doing media stuff - I really don't care what OS I use so long as the software I want is available for it.

I still find it quite ironic that the hand me down and hand me down again imac (Maybe five or six years old) my son is using is more usable and faster as a Windows 10 machine than it is when running it's native MacOS. Boot camp has been in windows mode for months.

I detest Apples ringfencing habits and further habit of deciding what they think you will do with the machine and making some things they don't think you need to do almost impossible. Ever tried to turn off scroll wheel acceleration on a modern Mac? Basically not possible to do, it makes sense and works well so long as like stroking the back of the not so "Magic" mouse to scroll. Get the irrits with that and plug in a traditional mouse and scrolling becomes click click click at one line at a time, and when you speed up a little the acceleration factor takes over and half the page flashes by! I gave MacOS the flick on that machine for Bootcamp/Windows as I was doing a lot of word processor type work and the not very magic mouse ran out of magic altogether and navigating docs (Or web pages) was a horrible experience as a result of needing to use a PC mouse. When it becomes too slow for the young bloke to tolerate I will buy a monitor and strap an Intel NUC of decent spec to the back of it.

Windows 10 or Ubuntu thanks. If the capture, stacking and post software I was using was ported to Linux, it would be just Ubuntu thanks..

Col,
Your use of alternate implies they will swap back and forth - some may.
Really, you probably already use multiple operating systems, given you likely own and use a mobile device.

I've used so many different systems over the years for home and work, including Macs. While the OS is far better than Windows, it's so limited compared to Linux.

I will grant that the Mac hardware is polished, but the limitations are cramping if you need to step out of the strict box provided.

And for those of us who haven't a clue, to be honest!

I have an old laptop which ran so badly (and sick of the updates) on W10, I tried Ubuntu on a USB boot stick. What a revelation.

Clean, easy to use and intuitive. The forum posts we have all seen with seemingly endless lines of code just to get your camera working in Linux just hasn't been needed. Everything works out of the box...Kstars, ZWO and Atik cameras, EQ control, Logitech wireless gamepad etc.

I think folk sometimes hunt for issues with something "new" to them (such as a different OS). Just give it a go

My daughters laptop stopped booting into windows 10, we needed to get the data of before I started to reinstall everything. Tried to make a bootable windows usb os, what a lot of hoo ha to get that happening, but a quick download of Ubuntu and a bit of free software to make that into a USB boot stick, so easy and painless and everything just worked no installation needed the OS ran of the usb.

With a professional lifetime of unix systems and linux etc. I've been a 100% OSX user since the version X release 20+ years ago. Windows 10 has re-entered my life for imaging and it's a miserable experience... The endless bugs and issues caused by uncontrollable windows updates is intolerable. It's still about as unreliable as ever too.

Honestly people are totally tribal about this nonsense, and for 99% of usage it doesn't matter a stuff which platform you use.
