These waves were a regular feature of the OLD (B&W) TV series "Sea Hunt" . Lloyd Bridges used to get caught in one every second episode. They exhibit the strange phenomena that while Lloyd would be writhing about as he was tossed about objects in the background were stationary.
I can't believe that I used to find this stuff believable, but I was very young.

The submarine “Seaview” on Voyage to the bottom of the Sea 60’s TV show use to get caught in undersea waves too
Admiral Nelson ( Richard Baseheart ) would order Captain Crane ( David Hedison) to call over the mic “ Attention all crew , rig for turbulence brace yourselves”
Ahh..... great TV shows of the 1960’s bring em back instead of the rubbish kids watch today
Back to the article ..... it’s interesting what can be observed and identified from low earth orbit in regard to Oceanography
The British navy in WW 11 discovered that waves generated by the shear of outgoing surface water and cold incoming Atlantc water through the Strait Of Gibraltar were big enough to overturn submarines. Remember that the density difference between the two water bodies is relatively small so the generated waves can be tall and steep.
