Ryzen

Has anyone jumped into one of these new AMD CPU's? looks like 3 core chips for a couple of hundred, right up to 64 core CPU's for 6 grand. Crickey ......

Did an 8 core i7 remote desktop host for a foot doctor last month. Chip was $600.

I'm just pissed my 8 year old i7 mobo blew. New i5 guts cost $505.

hmmmmm.

They are really good, so good there is almost no reason to get Intel, especially the new 5000 series Ryzen cpus that are coming out soon.

I upgraded a few months ago from a 4 core i7 4770k to a Ryzen 3900 12 core and there is a huge difference in speed, especially in processor intensive apps like Pixinsight.
As sunslayr said the new 5000 series will be out soon and they are even quicker, supposedly quicker than the intel chips even in single core performance where the older 3000 series lagged behind Intel a bit.

I have a new Ryzen 3970x machine . I was actually after the 3960...but the supplier could not obtain that decidedly more affordable CPU option in a reasonable time frame.
Suffice to say the Ryzen 3970x blows my other fairly new i7 out of the water and even makes the latest i9 intel chips look slovenly.

I built my desktop with the Ryzen 5 1600 in 2017.
Normally no issues, but last week when processing M42 in Photoshop it crashed. :-)

I went for the 3900x. No complaints and much faster than the i7 it replaced.

Do these chips just slip straight into the same socket as the old intel chip came out of?

And if so, does any other hardware have to be changed at the same time, such as motherboard, memory etc?

no - different mother board/chipset

Got it, I think. I was confused when you said the 3900 was faster than the i7 it replaced. But now I understand what you meant.

It is a whole new desktop machine in my case. Apart from the CPU I also upgraded a few other things like SSD and memory. The big difference with the Ryzen vs intel chips in terms of image processing speed is the number of threads - especially for modern software like PI that takes advantage of multi threading.

If you can bear it, wait a little for the Ryzen 5000 series just on a best bang for buck. There’s quite an appreciable bump in IPC (instructions per clock cycle) of almost 20% over the 3000 series.

So...the Ryzen 5600X and 5800X (6 and 8 core models) have just become available in Brisbane today at a roughly $60-90 premium over the 3x00 models.

Perhaps the more interesting models are the higher core count 5900X and 5950X (12 and 16 core respectively), although it remains to be seen what the Australian pricing will be when they become available.

2nd this

I upgraded my 3930k intel to a 2700x on an x470 motherboard.

I handed that cpu down to my mum and bought an 3950x when they were released and dropped it straightinto my x470 bpard after a bio update. Its an absolute beast. Editing in pixinsight is a dream. The new 5950x is tempting but i dont use my pc to earn money so ill wait till the next gen.
Its been rock solid stability wise.

They also, so far, are less of an anti consumer company compared to intel. Thank the gods we finally have some competition in the cpu space, only a few years ago intel were charging thousands of USD for an 8 core, and i bought the 3950x 16core 32thread for 1200 AUD.
Now they just need to make a competitive high end gpu...

I recently upgraded my laptop (the old one wouldn't have looked out of place in a Steampunk exhibition...) to one of the new HP Envy series with a touchscreen. It's got a Ryzen 7 somewhere inside it, and the performance is good.
The only thing I've heard about these is that if you work them hard (I'm thinking about merging multiple photos here) they can run a bit hot. However, nothing adverse for me in general photographic work.

With laptops the biggest influence on how hot they will run is how the cooling system is designed. The ryzen 4000 series cpus in laptops, if i recall correctly, match or outperform intels offerings in performance per watt. I have the dell g5 se laptop with a 4800H, it runs warm when doing heavy editing like deconvolution, and video remdering, but considering how much work it was getting done i am very happy with it.

Might wait until the new year to buy one of the new Ryzen chips - apparently a distributor in Oz sold out of 500 of the faster chips in minutes when they were released in the early hours of Friday am.

Once the early adopters have bought their chips and beta testing has completed, I'll build a new processing machine.

Ha, almost the same as me.
4770 (non K variant, I don't overclock) to a 3900X last year and couldn't be happier.

What a beast of a CPU.
